Magoosh is the best!!!

Cheekyblah

I love this app, it helps with pronunciation, it has very accurate, simplified definitions for vocabulary words, and can boost your vocabulary like crazy. Helps a lot for the SAT.

It's good repetition

I like the words it focuses on and I liked the way it repeats words that you struggle with.

Underbaked

The Reluctant Critic

This is, at best, a rudimentary starter lesson in advanced vocabulary. There are thousands of difficult words in the English language, and here we are presented with only 1200 of them. It is also limiting in that there is rarely more than one definition given, and, as others have noted, there is no context provided for any given word. “Betray” is but one example. Most of us use it to mean something entirely different than “reveal.” But in this program the word is given short shrift. A great many words are arcane or archaic, or might be found fourth on the list of definitions in any dictionary. If you’re into literary classics of old, you will benefit to some extent. The pronunciation icon rarely works on the first attempt. You will get not able to connect messages until your fourth or fifth attempt. The Merriam Webster app has no problem with this at all. I think this program is best for high school aged individuals aiming to lift their standardized test scores, and even then it won’t cover everything one needs to know. The best vocabulary builders remain only in printed volumes. This program is sloppily coded and hasn’t been updated in nearly a year. Doesn’t seem like the developer is keen on further improvements.

Pronunciation fail

For some reason it’s unable to play pronunciations

Good vocabulary, but a liberal slant

Adam_1

The examples given help you remember the words, especially those you miss, but they often have a liberal bias. For jovial the example is supporters of the presidential candidate were jovial when she won the election. For misconstrue, the example is a politician who doesn’t trust journalists. For erratic, the example the president not getting re-elected due to an erratic level of support. For autonomous, the example is factory workers losing their jobs. For chauvinism, the example is people who aren’t vegetarian. For stipend, the example is someone with student loans who can’t get a stipend from the government. For insufferable, the example is someone who always tries to achieve more than others. The list goes on and it happens often; maybe once out of every 4 or 5 words on average and there aren’t correspondingly conservative viewpoints. It would be easy enough to avoid the underlying bias or at least to change some of these examples...jovial that he won the election, journalists misconstruing what was said, factory workers being more productive when working alongside autonomous systems, students working or attending lower priced colleges to avoid needing stipends from the government, people who belittle those who try harder are insufferable, etc.

Update made my progress disappear

Rewriting an app shouldn’t mean making your users’ data disappear.

Great App

Roll Tidr

I really love this app because of the tremendous repetition. I can tell it is embedding the words in my brain because of the repetition.
