In order to win the Hearts and Minds of the local population you will need to search for and destroy the Vietcong (VC) insurgents, who infiltrate from the Ho Chi Minh trail and destabilize the province by intimidating the locals, laying mines and ambushing your forces.

The insurgents also have a bigger brother, the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). This well trained, conventional army have much wider ambitions than the VC, they want to take total control of the valley, a stepping stone to unifying North Vietnam with the South under communist rule.

The NVA conducts operations from across the border, primarily aimed at supporting the insurgency and launching offensives when the time is right.

To carry out your COIN mission, co-ordination of ground troops, special forces, artillery, mechanized units, training of local forces (ARVN) and airmobile assets is essential, but of greater consequence is winning the support of the local population. With greater co-operation from the local inhabitants comes the reward of intelligence, a key factor in COIN warfare.

The war is not fought in isolation, so as the commander of the US forces, you will have the added complexity of managing the support for the war back home, should you the lose the Hearts and Minds of the American people, the war will also be surely lost.
This is a game that captures the true essence of the Vietnam War, where airmobile operations are paramount, fire support bases play a critical role and air strikes can save the day.

Rise through the ranks and watch your personalized uniform transform from a junior Lieutenant to General as you relive the Vietnam War.

Another unique strategy game
ojtitus

Slitherine is the master of AAA quality strategy games and has really been branching out from their traditional strategy games like Battle Academy and Panzer Corps and has been offer more unique strategy games like Vietnam '65 and Qvadriga. Keep up all the great work.

Great

Great strategy game not only of Vietnam, but counter-insurgency tactics

Simple to play, yet deep enough for the hardcore
Magnum9846

Vietnam '65 is a very simple game to get in and play, yet hard enough for even the season tactical gamer to master. It's a single player only game, and a game is 60 turns long, each turn is saved automatically so you can do a few turns, and continue later. Not only is the location and time period unique to most other games, but so is the goal. To win the hearts and minds of the 10 villages, gather info and then hunt and kill the enemy. Of course doing this with boots on the ground, basic armor and air support, all a while keeping your troops in the field supplied. A unique and pretty awesome turn based tactical game for your iPad. Don't miss this one, well worth the 10 bucks.

Spoiled by previous Slitherine games?

I cannot help but still be totally immersed in Panzer Corps. And then along came Panzer Corps2 with an add-on in the making?!!? Tried this game in the interim and it's a totally DIFFERENT beast (as was the whole Vietnam Nam conflict; yes, hardcore gamers, I do already get that). But Each game 60 turns long? Always the same MINES type game of try to find them before you get killed? Additionally, I don't have a walker yet but found the tutorial to be less than "tooting."/helpful. Will set it aside for a bit. I can still thoroughly enjoy prior wonderful Slitherine products. Also, sadly, hate me if you will, but I like games that you can adjust so that that you can win a bit until you learn how to play on even ground. Don't see that here. This genre can always use more entrants but not satisfied with this particular offering. Keep up the excellent efforts though, Slitherine; no other company can/has been able to touch your fare in my book!

Awesome Variation on TBS
Wiener Bud

I got sucked right in. Once you get all the little details, it becomes totally immersive. I love it!

Crash
Hotsauce814

For the short while I am able to play it is a very fun game, but after a short while the game always crashes. Not sure if anyone else is having this problem. Fix this and it is a five star for sure.

Meh
D-Boy It

The mechanics of the game are a bit clunky. It's never quite clear how many moves each unit can make before its turn is over. This game heavily tries to emulate the CIV series, but is just not as much fun. The combat and finding the enemy gets quite monotonous and frustrating. All in all, the game is entertaining, has a lot of potential, but for now it is a bit boring and not really worth the $10. Maybe wait for the price to go down before purchasing this one....

Quagmire of a Two-dimensional Game
Ed Garfield

If the designer wanted to show how frustrating the Vietnam war was, he failed. Instead he has ended up with a frustrating game. The game is based on a random hidden enemy. The logistics end up being a boring task for the player. Too overbearing. Hearts and minds play a huge part in the game's mythology but little to do with what is going on the map. You occupy a town and it turns into a Viet Cong supporter. Why? Too lame in my opinion. The player cannot create a winning strategy. If that is what the designer imported he has failed as a game designer, but not as a historian.

Excellent COIN simulator
FL2934abc

I don't know where the enemy is, but I know he's out there and he's up to something. I'm sleeping with my Bowie knife under my pillow nowadays. I play this game according to COIN doctrine (ink stain strategy) and I'm doing well so far. Other Slitherine games, like the WW2 simulators, stress combined arms (3G warfare) strategy, but this game is about 4th generation warfare. It's got simplified units--the combat engineer doubles as a mechanic and loses most of his combat punch, for example--but it covers the essentials. If they added a field medic and a mechanic unit it might add too much complication. But I think it wouldn't be too much to ask for a psychiatric unit to deal with my PTSD, right?
