Like Magic

straylight365

I recently had back surgery and Steam Link gave me the ability to play the games I love while recovering. The streaming technology is truly magical, transporting me through an iPad to the games I love running on my PC. I was shocked several times at how well it worked with controllers, keyboards, and even the Magic Mouse. I can think of dozens of use cases that don’t involve major surgery to appreciate the tech. This is truly fantastic stuff. I pray Steam continues to invest in this life-changing app.

Good thing this isn’t perfect

So in the last year I have found myself hopelessly addicted to a little pc game called Kenshi, it quickly surpassed all other titles in total play hours. I came across the steam link app and thought “why not let this game run my life completely, even when I can’t be around my laptop? I surely have nothing better to do.” So I set out to get this working. For those who don’t know Kenshi is a game you can essentially play on pause so perfectly suited to this very high latency format. It was about two days of being impressed by how nicely their editor lets you set up a control scheme, triple checking that I had saved it in every way I could think, and finding my setup gone on returning to the app before… Some glorious serendipity of overlapping bugs allowed me to recall my settings! I was off! Also thrilled to find that it is workable even streaming across town over cell. In fact performance seems inconsistent no mater what network setup I've tried, even with a cable in the computer sitting next to the router. However, it has always worked well enough to get my fix in various levels of blurriness. Unfortunately the app also crashes when taken out of focus and sometimes randomly. But still, pretty wild the ways we can waste our time these days, this must be meta. .? Keep trying valve, you are somewhat appreciated. Ken heads check my layout, I think it’s the only one

Impossible to use

I found this app thinking it would be really cool being able to play pc games on the go, however this thing is so laggy! My device could only see black! However this app was a great idea but it needs to fix the lag problem

Not able to set up

roolyf

So I watched tutorials how to set it up. Over and over again it just flat fails. The best I was able to do is getting sound on my device but no picture. Researched, changed settings. 2 hours in and I don’t even remember why I thought this was a good idea. A real PITA. They’ll get this working eventually, this ain’t it tho. It’s a shame, I had high hopes. I have good internet and new devices so if you have a Mac like me, you should probably avoid this.

Surprisingly Good

All things considered the fact that this allows you to remotely control and play your Steam games from your phone is pretty good. What surprised me the most was how actually decent the latency was. It’s still not something I’d recommend for all games, but the fact that I play actually fine in a fighting game (on single-player modes at least) is pretty remarkable. The only real problem I see with it is that there’s no touch controls. Touching your screen can only control your mouse. If you have a modern wireless controller then chances are it can be connected to your phone through Bluetooth. It’s a neat feature that wasn’t necessary for them to add, but it’s available anyway and actually works pretty well.

Did something to my computer

MacBook Pro Owner

I downloaded this app trying to see if I could play Windows-only games on my Macbook Pro. I opened the app and connected it with my computer, then while it was loading, my mouse started moving on its own and my screen started going up in contrast, like it was melting. After forcibly turning my computer off and then back on, I immediately deleted the application from my device. After signing back into my computer, everything seems normal (as of the time I am writing this), but I’m not sure if what happened then will happen again. I hope this app didn’t do anything that would damage my computer, because I’ve already had to replace the hard drive on it once.

Great when it works

It works great on my iOS & TvOS devices, but my M1 MBP crashes (the whole device) every time I connect to my PC.

Installing this broke mic and speaker setting for Zoom

davidoff__light

I installed this to try on my M1 macbook pro and immediately after that the mic and speaker were "greyed out" . Uninstalling the Steam Link didn't fox the issue.
