Notch problem

Pterrrrrr

On an iPhone XR, the notch hides a key part of the play area.

Fantastic Gameplay

Single player alone makes this app well worth the price. UI is intuitive and simple, while the achievements and leaderboard systems give a sense of purpose to players. I can’t speak to online play right now.

Great

Fun easier version of PuertoRicoHD

Good, but hope for improvements

Cubato

I’ve played it several times, always 3-player game against the AI. For me there’s a big leap in difficulty between the medium AI (“experienced”) and the hard AI (“expert”). I can easily beat the former by almost twice the score and I’ve yet to beat an all “expert” AI game. The AI moves are also very predictable. I still enjoy the game, just hope to see some support to improve the AI and update the game to include the 2nd Edition expansion content and more balanced Guild Hall card.

Great game, great app!

It may not be the sexiest looking app in the world, but I’ve been playing it for years and loving it— an absolute keeper!

Multiplayer isn’t working

ParamPamPam123

Can’t play with my gf - multiplayer is broken. What a waste of money

Solid game, but any chance for expansion?

Scoob070

I enjoy playing San Juan against the AI. However, the expansion makes the game more balanced and enjoyable. Are there any plans to offer the expansions as an update or upgrade? I would purchase immediately.

Relaxing, ambient game

Very nice game. Relaxing yet challenging. I usually play a local game. The music and the soft chatter in the background are great. Looking forward to winning more and adding other games by this developer. Nicely done!

Re: a faithful translation well worth the price

Long-time fan of the tabletop game. Truly a classic. As a translation of the original (without the expansion cards) it delivers in single player a nicely scaled set of AI difficulty levels. The expert level bots are tough but beatable. (And, contrary to the comments of the previous reviewer, if you adopt his advice you will lose nearly every time against the expert AI, at any player count.). For those who love the original and appreciate the nuance and need to adapt as play progresses, just as in the tabletop, you will find this version entirely rewarding. If you have no taste for or experience with the original game, then you will complain as the previous reviewer did. But it is not a complaint about the quality of the app, rather it is a complaint about the original game which the app translates faithfully. Also, to clarify his criticism of some of the cards being unbalanced. That is patently false. The tabletop version got an expansion, not to “fix” the balance of the original, but to add more variety. The extra cards from the expansion required that the game be rebalanced to account for their addition, not the other way around. Online play: I have never even bothered trying the multiplayer, so I’m not competent to comment on it, but as a veteran player I can vouch for both the quality of solo play, and the ease of the interface to intuitively track all the info you need to simply play the game. I’d go so far as to say that it’s elegantly simple. Just like the original San Juan, without the need for the expansion cards. Though it’d be nice to have the option to play with them. If the publisher decided to add them at some point I wouldn’t protest, but wouldn’t use them that often, either.

Very chill and nice app, just needs a good update.

Nice looking app, just needs a a few things: Online game desperately needs a turn-base mode, like on the Ticket to Ride or Le Havre app. No one really has the time to play live and real time, then get kicked off when you pause the game to open something else on your iPad. I would play this much more with my friends if it were turn-based and I could make my move “whenever daily” time-wise (with a notification that the other player made his move). The expansion would be nice. On phones, it would be nice if the print on cards could be zoomed-in to read the cards better. Maybe More Spanish guitar music added. After these implementations, it will become a perfect 5 stars.
