Has serious problems

Bicycle Commuter 42

If you are a serious record keeper, this app is not for you. It doesn’t record the route accurately at the beginning of a ride and just draws a diagonal line, underestimating the distance. Sometimes it starts late, so the starting point is not even right. For a long ride this is not a problem, but the app is more geared toward a frequent rider who does not want to be bothered by turning it off and on between errands. It records all trips, so if you leave your house on a given day, no matter whether you ride or not, it counts that as part of a “streak.” I currently have an 11 day streak, and I only rode my bike 6 of those days. Assigning modes of transportation seems to be random. Car, bus, train, bike, whatever. It records car trips as train trips when there are no railroad tracks anywhere nearby, or bus when it is not on a bus route. It complimented me by thinking I could bicycle at a steady 35 mph (the speed limit) and called a car trip a bike trip, when all my other bike trips were average 10 mph or less. It definitely needs some work. I would prefer it not record all my non-bicycle trips. I’m not interested in keeping track of my car trips. It is called Ride Report.

Works really well

I tried this app very early on, then came back to it much later and was pleased to see how far it had come in terms of intelligence and power efficiency. It’s great to see a dedicated developer iterate and improve something to the point where it’s useful but also kind of invisible! I was a dedicated Cyclemeter user for a long time, but starting and stopping rides got to be a hassle in that app—I much prefer this mode of passive tracking.

Misses about town rides.

I loaded the app yesterday and was satisfied that the four segments I rode were recorded. I had to correct the categorization of the two segments associated with my half mile ride to dinner and back that were recorded as walking. I was not riding that slow. This morning I rode six blocks to the bakery and back and the app totally missed the entire outing. I hope the ‘no lycra’ motto holds up, but I’m starting to wonder.

Useful

Set-up not intuitive at first

On the screen after you accept the terms, you must swipe in the little phone graphic to get to the next page. This is not clear, resulting in me thinking get app was frozen.

Crashes

A Biker-in-PDX

Tracks all rides even car trips. But crashes when deleting a trip. Setup not clear. Seems like a good start to an idea. Needs refining though.

Does exactly what it claims really well

Ride Report is awesome. It's really simple, doesn't bother you, and always records my rides. It doesn't have all the features I might like, but what it has is great. On the balance, it's better than any of the various trackers I've tried, just because of how solid, clean, and easy it is. --- Unfortunately, the big, long, detailed review I had written was deleted when I had to enter my password. I keep all my passwords in 1Password, so I had to cancel the log in, switch to 1Password, and switch back. ARGH Apple!

Tracks well

I've been running ride report for months now. It detects rides really well. It's nice to never need to open the app and manually start or stop a ride. I'm excited to see what happens next with that ride data.

Easy and reliable

Ride Report does exactly what it claims. No clutter, easy to use, reliable. Highly recommended.
