My main use is to look up British and otherwise obscure words and phrases that don't appear in other dictionaries. The app overall is quite useful, but I have two complaints: 1) it always starts in "thesaurus mode" and there seems to be no way to default to dictionary lookup, and 2) it continually pesters the user for a five-star rating. (How needy, and how unprofessional.)

Great-y great great.

Not as user friendly as the original deluxe edition by OUP

xgmed

Unfortunately this app falls short of the the highly usable original Deluxe edition of OUP's dictionary and thesaurus. The original version would allow tapping and then transferring to the relevant definition for words within the text of the definition, thus facilitating endless cross-referencing. Beware of the app's (Mobisystems) demand, every so often at opening, to demand a 5 star rating.

iOS updated and you have to buy it again

When Apple updated to a new iOS the apps didn’t work anymore.

sad but true

I would give this a five star review if the default was to actually start with the dictionary. The blank search field reads “search in dictionary”, so I type a word and it defaults to the Thesaurus. ?! I don’t turn this on to use the thesaurus very much. I need a dictionary. Also, please stop asking for a five star review. If the creators make the default the dictionary, I would give you the review you seek.

Clarity

I still have the same sentiments since 2016. My opinion has not changed. My review from August 2016: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I am a writer and public speaker who uses this app a lot because this dictionary app clearly defines archaic and difficult words much better than all the other dictionary apps in the AppStore (most of the time). I also recommend Chamber's Dictionary and Thesauraus (2 separate volumes).

Quick review

Useless until update

App needs to get rid of constant reminder for ratings. Very annoying. Hence my rating, which unfortunately because of this irritating feature, is thus. The other version of this dictionary (by another developer and now no longer available) was significantly better.

Unprofessional UI

Onemorebit

Pushing requests on paying customers within the main screen is a tasteless design decision and an unpleasant experience.
