review update: still using it. Level 3 mastered! original review: Someone in my class showed me Kanji Flip. It looked interesting, but I didn't really get why he was raving about how much he liked it. I mean the graphics were pretty nice, but it just looked way too simple with the big red and green buttons. Well, after class the guy explained it to me, and let me try it. Once I started into using it, it was actually pretty involving. I missed a lot of the kanji at first, but that kind of made me want to get it right the next time it came up. My classmate was getting tired of me hogging his iPod, so I ended up buying my own. I am very glad I did. After a few days now, I keep at it just to try to complete the level 3 set. I'm getting pretty close. The progress bar keeps me trying to get all the untested kanji out. But unless you actually learn it, it doesn't give you more kanji. So I have been at it on a misson of sorts. What's amazing is that I am blazing through the kanji that I've burned into my brain.

I really like this program and it has helped my reading greatly. I'd really like to see it show the other way around where it only show the English and kana so that I could practice writing. Also, maybe show the strokes.

Liking it!

Bought Japanese Flip based on some online articles and blog - we really like how it has improved our vocabulary. Decided to get serious with kanji, so bought Kanji Flip. Excellent! Only one complaint, compared to Japanese Flip: only one user option! My wife and I share Japanese Flip but can't with Kanji Flip... Maybe an update will fix that? Hint, hint...

Lacks important features

This app should be called "JLPT Kanji". It lacks any useful function for making your own study sets. Adding your own Kanji to a list of 1000s of JLPT Kanji and hoping to see them again is a meaningless feature. More of a Kanji game than a serious study tool.

Great Application

Vunder

From the beginners perspective this is a great application to help as I dive deeper into this wonderful language. I appreciate the way it is organized and feel that it is something that I can use on the bus, the subway, of just waiting to get a cup of coffee. The user interface is super simple and is truly a breeze to figure out. The progression system is a good way to learn.

Responsive dev

The dev was really quick to respond to my questions because I did not understand how the program worked. He wrote back in 5 minutes! The email explained what to do, and I felt a bit silly when I realized how simple it was. Anyway, I appreciate the author's help. Hopefully others will email him like like I did, it helped me!

Now using Kanji Flip

Mr. subG

Kana Flip was the first app of Andre's that I used. I needed to learn hiragana, and it taught it to me very quickly. Kanji Flip is the program I now use after feeling confident in my ability to read kana. The amount of extra info in Kanji flip is going to keep me busy for a while. I am learning the meanings and some readings for now, but the two example words give me a sense of context. True, some of the words are too hard for me, but it gives me something to shoot for. I have now also gotten Japanese Flip, now that I have gotten through JLPT 4 in Kanji Flip. These have been solid study aids for me. I emailed Andre and he responded very quickly. I get the impression he cares about what he puts out. Keep up the great work!

!!

Geez, got this night before last, no previous experience with the kanji and 3 nights later I'm at 91% of all 103 starting kanji? Nuts-o; these apps must make it easy. The funny thing is, at the end of night 1 I was convinced it would be impossible and I'd wasted my money on this! Maybe having the iPhone to tap at keeps you focused? I don't know, but _really_ excited about the progress, thank you!!

Good but....

Terrific

This program has been amazing. I have been taking intermediate Japanese classes and it has really helped me do much better on the exams. The characters are put into the same JLPT levels as we are learning in class, so it is easy for me to study what I need to for the class. Also, I have added my own words, which has been a great help. I can't say enough good things about this program and my purchase.
