Great app

magormley

This is a great app for learning Japanese characters. I'm a complete beginner, and have only used the "Kana Quiz" feature so far, but it's already more than worth the money. I was using a book to learn the Hiragana/Katakana alphabets before, and making my own flashcards, but this program is far better. It has thousands of characters, and keeps track of the ones you know well and the ones you have trouble with to help you practice most effectively. I've found that 5-10 minutes 2-3 times a day has helped me remember more than my book did in a month (not that the book was bad, but having it right there on my ipod is just so much more convenient and fun). Highly recommended.

Great app for kanji learners

I have been using it for a few weeks now and I am really impressed. The learning reinforcement system is something like the Pimsleur language programs - when a new item is introduced, it appears frequently, then it appears less frequently over time as other items are introduced. Of course Kanji Flip has feedback in this process and modulates the frequency based on your right/wrong answers. I was very worried that it would become overwhelming as I moved into the advanced categories, but the system works very well and only introduces Kanji at a rate that you can handle as a learner. It's even better now that vocabulary has been added.

Wonderful app! Highly recommended!

This is a great app to help with learning Kanji. Fairly priced and well worth it. I love the fact that the answers are written in hiragana and katakana. Keeps me immersed in the language. Higly recommended for those learning Japanese or just need to keep from getting rusty. If you don't use it, you lose it!

Good program that needs features to be excellent. Recommended for students of Japanese.

A neat practice program for the student of Japanese. It shows a kanji and think of the correct reading and meaning of the kanji. You click show answer and it shows you the meaning and reading along with a couple of common kanji compounds. You then select right or wrong to indicate whether you were successful or not. This app is a great little tool that could use a couple features to be even better. First, the app doesn’t keep track of your success between sessions. It would be more useful if the app remembered how well you performed each time you used the program. Second, an additional mode that gives you a meaning / reading of the kanji and allows you to draw on-screen the correct answer and then compare with the actual kanji would be very useful. I will rate the program with three stars for now with the potential for an additional star for each of these two features.

Great for getting started but usefulness falls off a cliff after a while

This application is absolutely awesome for a quick fix on the go and polished enough to merit the price. If you can though, you should consider an application with emphasis on long term retention like Kanji Gold (a free desktop application) or several websites. First, I would like to pool more and more kanji (starting with 10 getting to 2000+) together for review. Second, I should rarely be quizzed on super simple kanji I have memorized and more frequently with new kanji I frequently forget. Finally, it should know when to stop! Each time I get one correct, move it "further" into the future which I can't touch until some time has passed. Each time I get it right, move it twice as far (or 1.5x farther, whatever). Without a feature like this Kanji Flip is just a toy for passing time. It would be a mistake (or a waste of time) to lean on Kanji Flip for rote memorization.

Mnemonic Annotations, Por Favor

Bro. Benny

This is a great app. Knowing the kanji gives you a great leg up on learning to read Japanese. What would be totally awesome, though, would be mnemonic / etymological notes that explain the characters' elements and give tricks for remembering their meanings. Short of that, an annotation feature that would allow you to save your own comments on each character would be helpful.

Outdated character set no longer commonly used

In traveling japan and mainland china I have been told repeatedly that these characters are the old/outdated characters and many are not what would be used now.

Awesome, but...

I love this app so much! So far I successfully completed JLPT 4 very easily in a little more than a week! I just wish there was an audio pronunciation of each kanji and the different ways they can be read. So not only will I be able to read the kanji, but I'll know how to speak them too!

Kicks おしり!

Excellent APP! すごいです! I have been using now for a month, and have found it to be extremely useful for increasing my vocabulary, especially when I have just a few moments to spare. The "smart" learning system works well, even though I feel dumb at times when I have to hit the "wrong" button many times for some of the harder kanji. But it has been working great for me!

Great for beginner and advanced

I am a complete beginner- not even text book or intro class or tutor. Program is so good I felt compelled to write this review. Beats reading a book (will eventually do that for grammar and real reading obviously but for now characters is focus)
