Fantastic

Really hyped bro

This app is the perfect companion to the physical book. I can have my old stain covered and well seasoned book on the counter next to me while the app tells me what to put in my goulash and when. I can go shopping for what I need and it makes a list based on what options in the recipe I’ve chosen. If I want walnuts in my banana bread recipe, I tap the option and when I create my shopping list it’s included. The sheer ease of this application marries the modern generation of cooking with the physical “Kitchen Bible” that is Joy of Cooking. I can send recipes to friends, show off my creations to friends, and share my love of cooking with the world even further than before. I cannot recommend this app enough. 6/5, 11/10, 101%

I’ve been waiting for this!!

CraigAndJoe

As a long-time fan of Joy of Cooking I’ve destroyed more than 1 copy. My current copy is literally in pieces — the spine separated several years ago somewhere around page 870 — and is now in 4 or 5 ‘chunks’, pages rippled from being wet, covered in stains and now-illegible margin notes, scribbles on the fly-leaves...all the worse for wear. Luckily my family knows what a fan of the Joy and I also have a gorgeous (and unused) first edition and several editions from the 30s and 40s. Joy is my first stop for any recipe development. Years ago I purchased Joy on a CD and was disappointed when operating systems outgrew the disc. I’m so happy to have a new digital edition today. Thanks for making this available in a format that won’t get stained or tattered.

Wish this had more pictures. What does the final prepared food look like? I would like to see what it is to decided if looks good to eat!

A polished gem!

Sweet Tooth Sue

It's hard to improve on a classic but this app sure does it, and more. I cherish my Joy of Cooking book for all of the memories it brings back of cooking with my mother. This app makes all of those recipes relevant again. It's simple and easy to use and the photos are great. I'm inspired to make the delicious "brownies cockaigne" again and look forward to discovering some untried recipes!

Most Amazing App

MrFlyFishinDad

Don't think of this app as just a cookbook--it is so much more! The navigation is quick, easy, and flawless. The app has many features you might expect: create menus (even on your own calendar), build grocery lists, conversions, substitutions, ability to add notes to recipes, bookmarks (handy for jumping between multiple recipes while cooking), and favorites. However, there are some features that set this app among the best apps: •Timers-you can instantly set timers when you come to them in the recipe & you can have multiple timers activated. •Block sleep mode so the device stays on while you are cooking. •Read mode will actually read each step of the recipe to you. •Command recognition allows you to speak and navigate through the steps of the recipe. This saves you from having to touch the screen if you hands get messy while preparing the recipe. •Each step is highlighted so you can keep track of where you are. You can highlight it with a simple tap or a voice command. •If you are familiar with the book form, you will recall the numerous references to other parts of the book. This are all linked, making it effortless to jump to the reference, read it, and get back to your recipe. There are plenty of other well thought out features you can read about in the "How to use this app" section of the app. If you loved the book, you will love the app even more.

Excellent edition that works great on ipad

I'll start by saying that 'my' Joy, that is the one I grew up with, is the two volume paperback printing from the 70s that was based on the 1963 edition of the book which my mother purchased from my grade school book club. This electronic edition is expertly executed allowing quick navigation, bookmarking, contains links between recipes, and allows you to put in your own notes about each recipe all while remaining true to the original vision of Joy. All of the best recipes are there, updated as needed, along with some new ones. Special sections are included for Joy Classic recipes culled from all Joy editions and for some of the author's family favorites. This is either an excellent edition all by itself or a great companion to the previous what I consider still relevant editions of Joy - those published in 2006, 1975, and 1963. My thanks to the publisher and to the family for keeping this book alive more than 80 years since it was first compiled.

Well designed app

Joy of Cooking has been my go-to cookbook for years. They have done a nice job with this app. The navigation is really easy and all my old favorites are there. I love the voice control so you don't have to touch the screen and the help made it really easy to learn everything. Two little suggestions would be: please allow conversions to dry weight for flour and sugar. Also I would appreciate a tab showing the recipe description from the original cookbook.

Great cook book, better app

Iron City 313

A simple yet informative cook book that is well though out and executed. Best money I have spent in the app store in a long time.

Couldn't wait!

The Joy of cooking is a long time tradition in our family. I was so anxious to get the app I got it as soon as it came out. However, I found that my iPad was too old to display it. What a disappointment! However I was finally able to get a new iPad and I tried out the app. I think they've done a wonderful job. It's got so many features, I can't wait to try and as many as possible. My one disappointment, was that there didn't seem to be a way to slow down the verbal instructions. At my age, I forget the list of ingredients quickly. I had to replay it many times in order to get all of them and be able to measure them before I forgot what they were. Perhaps there might be a way to have an option where you could slow down the rate they read each section of the instructions. Other than that, everything seems great and I hope it's a big success. I'm sure a lot of people will be giving this as a gift during the holiday season.

Adequate but not excellent

Based on the inferior 2006 edition instead of the truly excellent 1997 edition, the Joy of Cooking app is decent as a reference but terrible for browsing or inspiration and is missing the interesting and tasty additions found in the 1997 edition of the book.
