Recipes not the same as my books

Nicholas_Name

I was sad to find that this is not a direct substitution for my print copies of Joy. I came to find out that some of the recipes are significantly different. Some are so different that they are not the same dish. It is a good app but does not meet my expectations or have my trust. Update: the differences are because of the changes to the 75th anniversary edition. Since I don't use that one as my primary copy, there are problems. I am not partial to the latest edition.

Beware of the timers!

Wendyannh

Overall, I really like this app. It's easy to use, and I love being able to look things up and bookmark them no matter where I am. Yes, it's basic as a cookbook, as Joy has always been - but that's why I love it and keep using it. It's a reference for me. There are even built-in timers, which is lovely: just tap on the little clocks embedded at appropriate spots in the recipes or instructions, make sure it shows the timing you want when there is a range given, and tap to start. Theoretically at least, you could be running a couple at one time, which would be great when doing more than one thing at a time, although I haven't tested this. *****Those timers are why I've removed a star, though, because they *stop running* if you do anything else with your phone!***** For real! I just about died when I saw that. It was only by sheer dumb luck that I was able to salvage my ahi this evening because of this, and didn't burn down my kitchen. It's overcooked and definitely not rare as I was aiming for, but is at least still reasonably edible, so at least I don't have to go out. This is really unacceptable and so disappointing, though. This is not a cheap app as iPhone apps go, and with how much we use our phones for these days, it is utterly unreasonable to have to *not* do anything else with them while cooking so the timers will work.

Disappointed

Wished the app came with nutritional information. With so many people looking for healthy eating help, you would think this would be an automatic thing that would be included. Since cooking apps are a dime a dozen, move along and don't waste your time. There are better apps out there.

Always useful

Still the 'go to' cook book in our family. A great app

Solid App

Dennisk501

Very well done. Easy to use. Every recipe in the 75th anniversary edition seems to be there. One improvement: Use iCloud to sync favorite recipes across platforms (e.g. iPad, iPhone).

Gingerbread House recipe

Tottenbaby

DO NOT use the recipe in this app. It doesn't work. The gingerbread comes out of the refrigerator like a BRICK. And no matter how long you wait for it to soften so you can roll it out, it still crumbles. The recipe in the actual book is totally different, and it works.

Talking recipes!

Badkitty

Ok, every cook already knows that Joy is in the canon of great American cookbooks. The app contains the entire book. But wait, there's more! The app will talk you through all the steps for each recipe. It also recognizes voice commands like next, back and so on. No need to touch my screen with gunky hands. So why only 4 stars? Because the lady reading the steps speaks so slowly. It can be excruciating at times. But overall it's an excellent app.

Love the book and the app!

The book was a wedding gift and the most lasting. This app is a very handy addition and encourages more learning!

Encyclopedic for basic cooks. Nuff said.

Search for a food name, see alternatives. Just like The Book. I keep my dead tree Book for sentimental reasons, red ribbon marking "rolled biscuits". This is just the basics. Maybe not gourmet. Get it.

Recipes good, app baaad

davidfh

The recipes are alright. They get you through the basics but no help for origins of flavor or easy follow/looking of step by step instruction at a glance. When using the app it claims you can enter ingredients to get recipes and it has an area to do so but each time I have entered multiple ingredients it comes up as nothing available. If I did this once or twice I could understand but dozens and dozens of times after multiple updates. Example: ground beef (typed in), spices (checked) and tomatoes (checked). Result: No recipes found. When you look for recipes page by page, taco salad, nachos, etc. can be found to have these ingredients.
