Could not do without it.

I got this app to help me look up words for my mandarin language class (at the time I was a complete beginner). I didn't look to closely at it at the time, and didn't realize it had flash cards also. When I discovered them, I was very very happy! The app dictionary contents are very thorough and comprehensive, and is very easy to search and navigate. The flash cards are a godsend, and make learning the characters (not just the pinyin) much simpler! The way they are results prioritized makes them even more efficient, as is being able to select folders you wish to include. Meaning you can revise previous "lessons" at the same time as learning new ones. I also love that you are able to create your own custom flash cards from scratch very easily. This is a very useful feature! Overal, this app is one I recommend wholeheartedly to any language student. If it was hard copy, I'd say to keep it with your textbook!

what you see here is not what you get

TNTz9

what you see here is what you get AFTER you pay $9.99 for the audio component and another $4.99 for colored characters. As for what you get for the basic product, it's just another dictionary but with few meanings for the word and not too much to recommend it.

Nice app

A must need Chinese study app!!!

Bubbly37

Best Chinese study app ever! I can quickly plug in some vocab words and it already has the definitions to make flashcards. I quiz myself on vocab using these flashcards all the time!

NICELY, NICELY, NICELY DONE!

Some of the things i like about this app is what it DOESN"T do: It doesn't give you a pre-defined lists. It doesn't make you conform your learning plan to what the app has to offer. It doesn't make it difficult to add words/lists. It doesn't make you buy an upgrade to add words to the dictionary. You can use the "dictionary" function to find the words you need to study, and add them to a list - say verbs, grammar, colors, etc. whatever you decide to name your list. You can create lists within lists. So Verbs may be a list within the Grammar list - Fantastic. You can EDIT what shows on the card. So if the app gives you 3-5 definitions, but you only want 1 to show on the card, you can get rid of the ones you don't want. NICELY DONE! I have added, probably 60 - 70 words so far, and very few weren't in the dictionary. This is a really good record compared to other apps. "Fragrance" was one of them - feng fong/fang is what i was looking for. Feng was there, just not feng fong. I would gladly pay money for this app, and bought the upgrade just so I could give these guys some money. We are taking lessons from a private tutor, so the ability to customize the words is fantastic. Just what we needed. Love the functionality of this part. All that said, here are some developments I'd like to see. I'd like some control over how often the words show up - the current functionality isn't exactly what we need (regarding "Right" and "Wrong".) The interfaces need to be a little clearer - it takes a bit of fumbling around to learn how to use the program. I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to be able to add phrases. Things like "that is a chair", and "my mother is chinese". (Yes, I'd pay for an upgrade if this were available.) I created two folders - in two different locations - my error. But I don't know how to delete one of the folders. This is no huge deal - I'll just rename it the next time i need to create a folder. Nice job guys!

Excellent investment

I have read some of the other reviews and, yes, there are a few extra things I would like to see but it looks like they are coming. All in all though, for the price, this is a fantastic app and a great tool in learning hanzi. I have created my own lists to suit the area of study I am learning and find this an invaluable aid. Definitely one of the most used apps I have bought.

Love it

dave4jr

Good job on this app. Absolutely love it.

very useful

Very nice and useful app. Only thing i haven't figured out how to stop mastered words during flashcard study from coming back. Otherwise, very practical

Needs Pinyin flashcards

MissJubilee

I love that this app lets me build custom word lists and uses my results to modify how often words show up when studying, but without making the ones I know once disappear entirely. Also the way it takes numbers next to words and turns them into properly-marked tones. So far I only have one (BIG!) problem with it and one question. I like learning characters but my main goal is to SPEAK and understand spoken Mandarin, so it would be MUCH more useful to have the pinyin on one side of the flash card instead of the characters. Yes I want to read someday if I live here longer but for now having the characters instead of Pinyin test me when I study is wasting my time. I'll be looking for an app that has this feature. My question is, if I buy the colors add-on, can I customize them? I already use colors for tones sometimes and they're not the same as the colors in the photo so I won't buy it if it'll just confuse me! Pleco lets me customize them (and for free, though there are plenty of other expensive add-ons with that powerful app).

Terrible

1255abc

Absolutely terrible. I tried to find just basic simple word and comes up with all these different answers, when I just want the one. NOT GOOD if you know more than the basic, I, you, he, she.
