German

TonksandLupin

I love a lot of things about this app. I’m currently teaching myself German just because I’ve always wanted to learn. I love the repetitiveness of the words in the levels. When listening, there’s an option to hear it slower to really get how things are pronounced. Once you’re on the next level, they still test you on the previous things you’ve learned as well. I also love how they have you type things in both your native language and the one you’re learning. I also love LOVE love how they accept typos! I think the only thing I’d suggest is to have a small level with pronunciation of consonant/vowel combinations in the beginning. Like, “ui” makes an “oo” sound. You know? That way it’d be easier to say the words you come across.

Good app ?

This is a good learning app, but I can’t seem to memorize anything but je chat and that has nothing to do with the app it self just me ? (there I said it, let my family go)

Excellent for learning Chinese

me and likeminded Americans

I have been using the free version for a few months now and I’m very happy with how this program works. Free version just means you have to watch a lot of ads; no problem. Lots of repetition is how you learn a language. I like how I’m learning to read characters. Very practical lessons with useful vocabulary. The only thing I don’t like about it is the Leagues. This is an attempt to motivate you to keep learning. It’s supposed to be fun by adding competition with other users. I progressed up to the highest Diamond League, but I was having less fun with learning and I was progressing through the lessons so rapidly that I had decreasing retention of what I previously learned. I also did not like the notifications that so and so took my number 2 spot or that I was at risk of being demoted! So, today I tried to turn off these notifications and remove myself from the leader board. I’ll wait and see if this works. I’ll learn better and retain more of what I learn if I can remove this stuff.

LOVE!

I absolutely love this app! It makes learning a new language so much fun. It will repeat the mistake you make many times until you fully understand and gives so many tips!

If you mess up your lessons you run out of hearts and have to wait hours or buy more to continue learning.

bad for learning spanish

SassySardines

I used duolingo to learn spanish but i would not recommend it. the app is horrible, you only get 5 chances to make a mistake or the whole lesson is over with no redos or try agains and as a beginner that can be really stressful because you don’t know anything. Additionally the app has features to help you grow but limits them for people with a membership only. I took a spanish class in person and learned so much more in less time. Duolingo doesn’t teach the basics like the alphabet, weather, numbers higher then 10, greetings, and ser/ to be in the spanish course. Instead duolingo focuses on advance uncommon sentences that most won’t actually use. Lastly duolingo has many errors in their sentences and lessons. If you read this developers please fix there’s issues

Many basic mistakes in the Japanese program

sarahyumi

Duolingo WAS good. However, a few months ago, they added some new “voices” to the Japanese lessons and now they are full of really basic mistakes and mispronunciations. I have been patiently reporting the mistakes for months now but the purple haired character is still saying “ha” for the particle “は“ and all of the new voices are mispronouncing kanji incorrectly. I am lucky enough to have a background in Japanese and recognize these mistakes, but people who don’t will be learning extremely poor Japanese without realizing it. It’s really a shame that the quality control isn’t better.
