I love it but

I would love to see this series support landscape mode.

Lovely Game, Terrible Presentation

thepieddragon

Lemme start off first by saying I absolutely love the Erdrick Trilogy. And, gameplay-wise and translation-wise, this is definitive version of the first game. If this is all you care about, buy this version. You won’t be disappointed. It a short, sweet JRPG that fits well with mobile. HOWEVER, the presentation is terrible. And it’s not because of art direction or because of the simple GUI. That doesn’t bother me, and even if it did, it’s not a dealbreaker. No, the issue is with the tiles. They’re very poorly scaled, as if stretched in ms paint without any regard to even pixel size, creating a blocky, uneven look to everything. This is distracting, to the point that it hampers the experience in my eyes. It wouldn’t take much to fix it either: adjust the tiles to where they have a nice, square pixel ratio, and are scaled evenly. If a dev responsible for updates by some miracle sees this review, this version is good, but it would be perfect if the scaling was proper, and if this problem were fixed, I’m sure you’d have lots of happy fans! From my understanding, Dragon Quest II also has the same problem, and this issue only stopped with Dragon Quest III. Until this issue is fixed (if ever), if the blobby scaling gets to you like it does to me, I would recommend sticking with the Gameboy Color’s Dragon Warrior I+II. Yes it’s somewhat slower than this version, and the view size isn’t great, but it looks like it should. Alternatively, if you can read Japanese, play the SNES version. Maybe the PS4 version, as gameplay I’ve seen of that one seems to indicate that the tile scaling is much better. Finally, if you want to push through the presentation on this version, I would recommend playing on an iPhone SE or similar small-screen iOS device. Doesn’t fix the scaling, but the small size masks it alright.

Nostalgic but a little disappointing

fffrune

I played the original Dragon Warrior on NES, and if you are looking to relive that experience then you’ll be a little disappointed like I was. 1. Graphics. This game is less pixelated and more cartoony than the original. I was looking forward to the classic graphics and was let down. 2. Difficulty. The challenge of the game has been reduced to the capability of children.

Great for a stroll down memory lane

seancassidy999

I spent so much time grinding this game as a kid, it’s a real treat to play on my phone. I recommend anyone who loved this game back in the day to pay up and spend a lazy afternoon reliving their childhood. Newer gamers have the opportunity to see the classic 8-bit RPG that in many ways was the genesis of a whole genre. This game, as klunky as it feels today, was a real original at the time and inspired a generation of rpgs.

Won’t save games!!

charlie n allie

I’ve tried 5 times to save a game where I get good weapons n good shields but then it’s not saved the next time I play even though it’s Saved??!!

Wonderful with one shortcoming

Champignon Champion

A faithful adaption of a wonderful game. In addition, this is one of the few ways to play the new “official” translation, which is great. Well suited controls for one-handed play for while on transit. Only one major complaint: the game will override any other audio from other apps, even with the game music turned off. Sometimes you just want to listen to podcasts while grinding!

This Game is The perfect JRPG on Mobile

Say0naraHG

If I only had one complaint Is that the game doesn’t let you listen to outside media while playing and the game goes into an infinite loading loop if you attempt to. But Oh my gosh this game is a masterpiece

A solid remastering; some bugs

BlueFlame78504

A great JRPG classic brought forward in time with some good polish. Unfortunately, the game has a few bugs that can break it pretty easily. Try not to lock your device while using the app.

Simple, fun, entertaining

Magic Kingdom Zeal

Can be finished in about two days (probably less if you look up a guide). No ads, no in-app purchases. A simple RPG (perhaps THE original simple RPG) that delivers a fun experience for all ages. Recommended.

Pure Experience

This is just a pure, fun old RPG. If you use a guide, you can beat it in a day.
