Tough to recommend

friendgoodfirebad

Crashes often, doesn't remember term filtering choices, when grading assignments you only see comments for each assignment by clicking on a separate button (far inferior to speedgrader in a web browser), so it is hard to recommend. Update: 12/5/17 Has crashed about 5 times in the last 30 minutes. Since the app doesn't pick up where you leave off, I had to re-click through all of 3 or 4 menus to get back to the assignment I was grading. Pitiful.

Too sluggish for a primary tool

A nice start

More useful features, but grading is maddeningly slow on my mini that runs practically any other app fine. I use it when there's no other option.

Still really buggy

The app is much improved from SpeedGrader in a lot of ways but inconsistent usability makes it very difficult to use. For example, when filtering quizzes and assignments many times the page won’t refresh. Or choose “needs grading” will show zero results even though the previous screen says there are 50+ students to grade. Half the time clicking on a students quiz to review it will show no submission on the actual grading screen. When grading a quiz and hitting “Update Score” it won’t actually update the final grade. Plus, it just crashes many times as well.

Major page layout problem on iPad Pro 10.5”

WV Prof

While I really like some things about the Canvas Teacher app (v 1.3.4111), the page layout in the grader is severely disappointing on my 10.5” iPad Pro. First, a positive: using the Apple Pencil is much easier and faster than using the Canvas grader in a browser on my Mac. It’s what prompted me to get an iPad Pro. Now the gripes: (1) the Teacher app on an iPad Pro 10.5 takes up nearly half the screen for the comments and grade entry window, and THIS WINDOW CANNOT BE MINIMIZED. In portrait mode, it is simply unusable because the available space for the assignment to grade is so small. I can reorient the iPad horizontally and do some manual resizing which at least makes the assignment text large enough to work with. But it’s still frustrating to have such a small space available. Ironically, my wife’s iPad mini is able to minimize the comment/grade window, so she actually has more space to use than I do on a 10.5” iPad Pro. It’s also strange that a colleague, who has a 9.7” iPad Pro is also able to minimize the comment/grade window. However, for some reason, my 10.5 inch iPad Pro does not make this possible. (2) The Apple Pencil makes it convenient and quick to draw lines and make highlights in different colors. I love this about the Canvas Teacher app. However, if you highlight text and want to make a comment about it, it now pulls up a comment window that takes up ENTIRE SCREEN, most of which is not being used for anything. The biggest frustration is that this makes it impossible to have any simultaneous visual reference to the student assignment. (2b) And, after making the comment and entering it with the little triangle, the comment is not then editable. Numerous times I have had to lose my comment just to go back to the student assignment window to see what I was commenting on, or I have had to trash my comment after it was inserted because it was not accurate due to the fact that I could not see the student text I was commenting on. While I am using my iPad Pro to grade, Canvas Teacher has a long way to go, and this particular issue with the 10.5” iPad Pro is extremely frustrating, especially since I recently bought the iPad Pro 10.5 to use for grading in Canvas. My low one-star rating specifically pertains to this page layout issue. This is not a comprehensive review of Canvas Teacher.

Good use!

Love the features it has just need to improve loading speeds when loading assignments to grade. Would also LOVE to see the option to view grades. Would rate higher if app loaded assignments quicker.

I really wanted to love this ...

Whenever I click on an assignment that needs grading, it crashes. The potential for this app is great, but it displayed minimal to no functionality in my experience with it.

No modules, limited functionality—terrible interface

vhswan

The Canvas app is a total disappointment. There is no way to access course modules. The functionality of the entire app is rudimentary at best. It’s veritably useless as a tool for my course. Save yourselves the headache and access Canvas through the browser rather than the poorly designed app.

Just not ready to be relied upon for many important tasks.

brotheralmond

I’m glad that Instructure has finally split off separate Canvas apps for teachers and parents. It makes excellent sense. But this teacher app is simply not ready to be relied upon for many important tasks. Just a few examples: the app loses text edits that have been made using the app; there are no notification capabilities; the functionality in messages is limited (can’t archive). I’ll be uninstalling and waiting for the developers to finish.

What happened to the familiar and reliable Speedgrader?

rustyran

This new concoction makes what used to be quick, easy, fast, simple into a hard to access, cumbersome, and MUCH harder to use mess. KISS! Bring back Speedgrader!
