Calm Harm – manage self-harm

Calm Harm provides tasks to help you resist or manage the urge to self-harm. Get started by setting your password so that it's completely private - this is optional.

Health & Fitness Free Stem4 iPhone, iPad, iPod

You can personalise it if you wish, by choosing the background colour theme and deciding on whether you would like some company using a variety of friendly characters.

The app then provides you with four categories of tasks to help you surf the urge. ‘Distract' helps in learning self-control;
‘Comfort' helps you care rather than harm; 'Express yourself' gets those feelings out in a different way and ‘Release' provides safe alternatives to self-injury.

There is also a ‘Breathe' category to help calm and get back in control.

You can do the activities for either blocks of five minutes or fifteen minutes with a countdown for each minute. You will be able to track your progress and notice change*.

Calm Harm has been developed for stem4 by Dr Krause, Consultant Clinical Psychologist using the basic principles of an evidence based treatment called Dialectic Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

(*Please note the app is an aid in treatment but does not replace it.)

Forgot memorable word? Forget using the app ever again.
Asdfghjkl;?

What’s the point of having a ‘forgot password’ option? Since you can’t access the app anyways if you forget the memorable word.. instead of a memorable word maybe just a passcode option if people really want the extra security. I have to delete the app now because I can’t use it anymore.. unfortunately.

Does the opposite for me

I try to do one of the options but whenever I do I fail which makes me more angry and hate myself more which the opposite of the desired effect.

Aside from minor bugs it’s the best app in the world
Popopopopipopioioooooi

occasionally there are some bugs like when it says how high the urge was i’ll tap on an answer but when i submit it it’s not there but aside from that this is the BEST APP EVER when i found it i had to show it to all my friends (because mentally unstable people gravitate towards eachother whoops) and it really helped some of them

Definitely the Best

After struggling with self-harm for a while, I began to search for alternate methods of release, and this app has helped with that beyond any other website or method. I definitely recommend it to those who are attempting to seek for help but still need help during the dark hours they can’t fix. I love the different options and trying a new one each time if needed. This app has such an amazing intention and I cannot wait for it continue to improve

Password protected??

Great idea, and I understand the importance of privacy— but speaking from experience when I’m in the middle of a panic attack I can’t stop and type a password. My significant other tried to help me and he couldn’t open the app either. Maybe thumbprint secure this in future versions?

Horrible during crisis
heathharri199903

This didn’t work at all. It’s absolutely horrible during crisis and kept asking for a password while I was having a breakdown and needed help asap. There’s too much to read while you’re having a crisis too and it’s not easy to use. I couldn’t use it and ended up cutting for the first time all year because I was so upset and flustered. This is a horrible app and it let me down when I needed it.

It’s great...when it works.

I recently switched to the iPhone X. It worked perfectly fine on my 8 plus. However everytime I need to log in, the keyboard won’t pop up when I need to sign in. This frustrates me because I really depend on this app to help me get through tough days and I can’t when the app won’t work. But I highly recommend this app. Especially for people (like me) who struggle with their mental health and they’re not ready to talk to someone about it.

Helpful!

This app is insanely helpful but it have one con - every time you leave the app, it has you enter a password. I totally understand why that is of course but I think it would be great if there was an option where you could choose whether or not you wanted this to happen. I love the app and I use it when I can, is amazing. Thank you so much to the creators for it

Good, Could be better

I think that this is a great app with a good intention, however, I feel as if some flaws exist. First of all, for most of the activities, I have no motivation to get up and do because it’s 3 AM in the morning and I’d just rather not. Second of all, I hate that I have to enter a password each time. I find that really aggravating, especially if I type in my password wrong. I think that the options to “ride the wave” out should be available every time you need it without having to log in. Maybe only have the user enter their password when they’re accessing their private information such as “number of times you’ve rode out the wave” or something. Otherwise, I find this app to be great!
