A great tactical game, even with some "quirks".

If I could give this game 4.5 stars instead of just 4, I would. There are just a couple of technical implementation issues that keep it from being a 5 for me. I just finished the main campaign, and I wish it had been longer. That's not a complaint, I'm just saying I liked it. :) I didn't track my usage, but I think it was something like eight missions, with a few branching paths so there's replay value, each around 30-60 minutes. Nothing to scoff for the price, and $3 gets you an expansion campaign where you play as the Hor-- err, the Uthuk (the villains of the main campaign), though I haven't played it yet. Gameplay-wise, the most novel thing about BattleLore is also the biggest source of complaints I've seen, and I'm not sure how I feel about it myself. Instead of being able to arbitrarily select units to move, the field is divided into "lanes", and you have a finite set of cards that each let you move X units in lane 1, Y units in lane 2, etc, each of which can only be used once before you spend a round to "refresh". I really, really want to contrive some kind of battlefield logic to make this make sense as a mechanic... but I just can't, and that's what annoys me about it. It's a contrived mechanic, and that's that. But. If you can get past that, the thing is it actually adds an interesting and novel level of strategy to the game. Do I use a big movement now, or save it for later? Is now my best opportunity to refresh? I can't justify the contrived limitations that the mechanic introduces other than to say that, at the end of the day, it was more interesting and fun than frustrating for me. I've seen some complaints about the "dice" being stacked in the AI's favor. Most units only have a 1/3 per die chance of a hit in the first place (though there are other results that convert to hits if you position your units well), and having had my butt saved more than once by the AI whiffing a roll, I don't think there's anything to that claim, personally. There are, however, at least two things I would like changed: there really should be an undo button for mis-taps and "oh *that's*how that works!" moments), and even bigger for me, the game should really save state between turns instead of just missions. Get called away by Real Life and your device closes the app to free resources? Expect to start the mission over upon your return. Feeling like you can't switch out of a mobile game is not great, and definitely my biggest complaint. Basically, this is a fun game with a novel twist, and though there are changes I'd like to see I think it's well worth a purchase.

App needs to catch up with physical game.

The App released an IAP for some of the new units that came with new expansion, but they mysteriously left out others. Having all the units available for both factions would balance out the armies and it just seems weird to not include all of them. The board game also has some neutral units you can use as well as a third "Undead" faction army. Those would be nice to, but Dawan and Uthuk units first please.

This game is Really difficult.

Really? Can't get past second battle. Absurdly unfair odds. AI always wins. Otherwise it would be awesome. I don't mind a challenge, but this is just stupid. Update: Wait wait. It gets better. I try again, because I really enjoy tactics games and I want to be able to like this game. I finally start to get a slight advantage over the opponent. What does the AI do? It plays a defensive Lore that, after at least 6x replaying this same battle, I've never seen before: "move your opponents forces at random." Random my foot! It moved only the units that had Lore buffs and were about to defeat some enemies. I call SHENANIGANS! Update: Played two more rounds since last update and... Drum roll... FINALLY vanquished the enemy. My trick: always double up your units to support each other and pin the enemy as much as possible. You get much more successful rolls when the enemy is pinned. The difficulty level is pretty high in this game, but I kept going back for more. I guess I like the abuse.

So close

This game could be perfect but the enemy "rolls" are far superior. I've gone 3 rounds in a row with all misses. So maybe it's just my luck but seems it's very favored to the bad guys in an unrealistic way. Other than that the style and strategy are awesome.

What a joke

If you hate your phone and have an extra $10 then I highly recommend this game. It will take your money then proceed to encourage you to break your phone in the most imaginative of ways! Seriously, the dice fall in favor of the cpu every time. Any win is a lucky win regardless of your strategy considering the cpu will likely wipe out your forces every match. I absolutely love this game and was really looking forward to the mobile version. I'm highly disappointed that I get maybe 2 kills in a match. Three on a good day. I'm deleting the app, but I'm not asking for my money back. Maybe they can use that money to make the game fair...

Waste of time

Blade329

I just uninstalled this thing. What a waste of great graphics and a battle system. What kills it is the difficulty. It's impossible. My last battle went like this, 6 of my archer units fire in two rounds. I got one hit, one retreat. Four enemy units go and he gets six hits, a retreat and a poison. That's how almost every battle goes. It took me six tries to get past round 2 of the campaign. It's a joke. Difficulty is not adjustable either. That's no way to design a game based on such a great board game. Unless they upgrade it, I won't touch this again.

Awesome.

Sennacherib!

Awesome game. If you have played BattleLore then you will know how to play this. No set up required.

Just like board game

Singerwantobe

Updated review - 9/2017: Yes! I've got all the in app upgrades. This game has so much replay ability and they just made it IOS 11 compatible so I can update my iPad now. Thank you, thank you. Original review-Game plays very similar to the board game. Love the board game. This taught me the board game and strategy for the game. Only negative concern about warning comes up saying this app will not work in future versions of iOS because the dev doesn't support it. I bought the I app so I could play the Uthuk. No bugs and got all the way through. Now play local multiplayer and solo mode. Everyone contact Fantasy flight and maybe they will update it.

What the hell with the dice

Debawv

This game is good except the dice. Graphics good. Story good. AI good. Dice are awful. Unfortunately the dice is most the game. The last time I played I was protecting the cattle. Enemy goes first. There are five cattle to protect. Before I got a turn 3 cattle were dead. That is 9 his on 12 dice. My turn came. I had 8 dice. I got zero hits. This is every game. It is no fun. Too bad. The board game is awesome. This is just work.
