Barbri’s co-founder and former President recommends BarMax.

“After leaving Barbri after 20 years, I thought I would start another bar review course. And then I discovered BarMax . . . The materials are first class. The lecturers are first class. The content is geared to the bar examination . . . I highly recommend BarMax." -Stan Chess

“I took the Cal Bar four times before I passed. I served as a representative for a widely popular study course. I studied for the Cal Bar using this well-known course without success. I was turned onto BarMax through a friend who used the same program and failed the Cal Bar three times. After using BarMax for the first time, my friend passed, as did I. I couldn’t recommend BarMax any higher. It’s affordable, convenient, and effective. I wouldn’t be a lawyer today without BarMax.”
- Shannon Ripple, Humphreys College of Law

“The cost savings are great, but in my opinion, the real advantage is that the BarMax course itself is simply better than the competition.”
- Susan Brown, University of Toronto

Awesome but can use some tweaks

Love this app and program! I just wish the app on phone would sync better with the computer site so that no matter when and where I use, my progress will be properly tracked !

Needs Refinement

Remember when you missed a class in law school and asked for the lecture to be recorded? Then asked your smart friend for their notes? Basically, that’s what you get with this. Which means the overall content is pretty good, however for nearly $1k, I expected more refinement (i.e. responsiveness to questions, outline free of typographical and grammatical errors, better flash cards, etc). So it is significantly cheaper than most bar review courses, however because the written material is so raw, I cant quite shake the feeling that I paid a Harvard grad a ton of money for his outline. Also very true that some of the lectures are bad, since they read the outline word for word...but depending on your professor that’s also true in law school, hence my comparison above. There are several that are really good in there as well. On the plus side, it’s basically what I needed to be able to study on go and on my terms. The app itself is simple to use and the added online access makes it very convenient. Note: I have not yet taken the exam, hence my opinions are free any pass/no pass bias, however I also cannot definitively speak to effectiveness of the materials. Edit: I reached out to BarMax regarding a couple blatant issues with missing info in both the outlines and flash cards...took them 3 days to respond with “we’re working on it” and “thanks for pointing that out.” It’s been two weeks, it doesn’t look like its fixed, nor have they provided me with the correct content. It’s becoming clear that being helpful to students is not part of their business model. Response to Dev: Thanks for the update on the cards, but would have been great if I were notified much earlier. Also, as I have noted, I don’t have an issue with the approach or content...just the overall sloppiness. There are a lot of spelling, grammar, and typing errors throughout. Additionally, besides the flash cards for Civ Pro and Crim, the rest are copy-paste jobs from the outline. Very disappointing that more time wasn’t put into others because the first 2 were great. Finally, some of the flash cards were in the wrong sections (e.g. “consideration substitute” in the section for “defense”). Shouldn’t this be something that is reviewed before publishing and the burden shouldn’t be on the student to point it out each time? Also CA Bar requires a scaled score of 1440 of 2000. Not a math wiz, but I think that’s 72%. All the scaling math may allow someone to get away with 65% in either the MBE or essays (but probably not both), but a blanket statement like that is misleading. Even under phased grading, you need an initial minimum score of 1390 (69.5%).

No time for a life class
Daclaw3

If you’re discipline enough to go through the lectures this app covers it all. The flash cards are a decent review to test your memory and the MBE questions are also useful for someone like me just taking the essay portion of the exam (as a practicing attorney) to test my working knowledge of the material.

BarMax will have (hopefully) enabled me to pass the July 2018 UBE with a score of 276 or above.

actual MBE Questions gave me confidence rather than the practice questions provided by my Bar Course representative. After completing roughly 1K of the BarMax genuine MBE questions, I returned to question sets from Bar course and was more confident but still not answering above 68-70% correct on average. The BarMax “real” question sets came back with an overall 80% correct. I feel confident about the MBE. I regret not using their entire program as my primary Bar prep study aide. I’m on the fence with MEE and MPT portions of the UBE but nevertheless certain the material in the BarMax xourse would have fit my learning style produced better results than I anticipate having elected to use the most heavily marketed program at my law school. We’ll see. But BarMax is better than the other program of 6 letters that begins with a B. Buy BarMax’s full course. I suspect it produces better results for a fraction of the cost.

Great supplement
somepiggy

I loved the MBE and essay grading features. I used BarMax along with Barbri and felt they complemented each other since Barbri is strong on essay construction. The BarMax lectures are also nicely broken out into sub-topics, which I usually listened to during the drive to and from the library during bar prep.

Great app but no lifetime access
Aldarion

Good program overall. The lectures and access to the MBE bank had the most value of the entire program. Unfortunately, lifetime access doesn’t mean lifetime access. So when I wanted to use the lectures and MBEs again when I sat for another state’s bar... my account was blocked.

Passed the CA Bar on my first try!
JoeAgain

I'm not a top student or test-taker. I am a busy, working attorney. Bar Max gave me everything I needed in a streamlined, easy to use anywhere package. It had everything I needed to pass the CA bar exam. I agree with some of the critiques--slow customer service, some inconsistencies and gaps in the materials, some less-than-compelling presentations. But those don't take away from the effectiveness and ease of use of Bar Max, or its great price and overall value.

Didn't pass bar, poor customer support
Slik777

I didn't pass bar despite completing every question and following outline. Weak materials for civil procedure which was heavily tested. Poor customer support.

Unsatisfactory and riddled with errors
rjain87

There are so many careless errors in this program. It does not elicit confidence. Do not cheap out. Buy a more established program that has been checked for bugs and errors. This is not worth the stress and dissatisfaction.
