Companion’s complimentary Upgrade – United Airlines Review

I learned great deal from our most recent flight IAD-LAX-IAD. At the same time, I was in great confusion on United’s complimentary companion upgrade policy/rules. From the beginning, we did not want to be separated with two different reservation number but the “system” did when we were upgraded on IAD-LAX flight. On return flight back, LAX-IAD. , I received upgrade 4 days in advance while my wife’s upgrade came 30 minutes prior to boarding which put us at unease. This “separation anxiety” is terrible feeling to have when traveling and waiting for it to clear. I realize we can use PlusPoints to accommodate but even without it, shouldn’t higher Tier prevail upgrade priority? We were confused at best.
