Messages don’t come through until I close and reopen the app – Google Chat Review

It works alright overall, but sometimes I’ll be messaging my boyfriend and I’ll sit there for about 10 minutes waiting for him to respond. Apparently, he always responds to me right after I message him, but I don’t see that until I close the app and notice that I have a notification from Google Chats from 10 minutes ago.
