Good app overall, but stat calc systems need improvements – Map My Ride by Under Armour Review
I’ve been using map my ride for a good three years now, and so it’s inevitable that I have grown fond of it as I’ve used it to map my progress. However as I continued to use it I started to notice something strange, whenever I rode with friends, all my totals would be lower, sometimes even if we had been riding wheel-wheel. This weekend I got a fancy new bike w/ a bike computer and it inspired me to run an experiment. I went for a light ride and recorded it on my bike computer, on Map my Ride and on Strava (I recorded MMR and Stra on the same phone). Here are the results:
Bike computer:
Dist: 1.69 mi
Avg Spd: 12.3mph
Cal: 72
Elv Gain: 134ft
Max Spd: 32.4 mph
Strava:
Dist: 1.62mi
Avg Spd: 11.9mph
Cal: 66
Elv Gain: 121ft
Max Spd: 30.4mph
MMR:
Dist: 1.52
Avg Spd: 9.2mph
Cal: 47
Elv Gain: 91ft
Max Spd: 22.6 mph
As you can see, the totals on MMR are dramatically lower, now the avg speed being lower is understandable, as Strava and my bike computer don’t account for when you are standing still. But the difference in Max speeds and Elv Gain is dramatic, with the max being off by more than 10mph.
