App worth buying! – ScaleBank: Guitar Scales Review

So I gave this app 4 stars, but it’s really 4.5 because the app is close to perfection. There’s always room for improvement and things rarely hit 5 for me but saying that, this app is worth buying as it lays out a multitude of scales rather nicely in a manner that is easy to understand for beginner to advanced. The amount of scales are more than you’ll ever need to become a great player (it even has Egyptian and Enigmatic scales!). A GREAT NEW FEATURE is the fact that they’ve added play-along backing tracks which allows you to practice the scales in a real-world context—invaluable in my opinion, to actually give you real experience of the scale. Here’s things that I wish would be added to the app: 1) I wish it gave us more customization options, simple things such as choosing the background and fretboard colors etc. Granted this isn’t the most important thing, but for people with vision issues, or just people who like to organize information by color, this option would be invaluable. 2) The ability to choose what info shows up on each note in the scale. So rather than just note names and finger suggestions, I’d like to be able to show the 3rd, root, 5th, 7th etc within the scale. Currently the root is highlighted in blue, a wonderful way of separating things and giving us more info, but if we could also simply choose the note info we wish to see, it would complete this otherwise near perfect visual information. 3) Also, some sort of CAGED inclusion would be a great feature and would go a long way to making this THE NECESSARY app for guitar players. A way to outline the correct chord from the CAGED system within each scale shape would be brilliant. It could be in the form of a colored circle around the correct chord notes, outlining the chord itself within the scale shape already showing. 4) Speaking of guitar players, if you want to make this app more universal, include a Bass guitar section or make another app geared towards bass guitar players specifically. That would help you rule both instruments in the app domain. The fact that you can request a feature from within settings in the app is a great idea and shows that the makers are happy to listen and implement positive changes. Anyway, great app and thanks a bunch for making it!
