Almost great – Portfolio Trader-Stock Tracker Review

This is the portfolio tracking app I’ve been using for the last several months as it has been the one that comes closest to doing what I want. It does a good job of tracking profit/loss and and is one of the few apps that shows TWRR. The visual presentation is nice. There are a few areas where it falls short. First is data entry. The first time you enter a trade for a particular symbol you must first add the symbol as a “holding”. This is particularly annoying when entering options trades and really slows down the process. It does speed up adding subsequent trades for the symbol but for options trades they are almost always unique symbols so this is especially painful here. Entering symbol and trade in one step would greatly speed this up. They could handle this by an “add new holding” option in the trade symbol chooser that would take you straight to the symbol entry. Lastly is one of knowing how old a quote is. For stocks and ETFs things are fairly well behaved, but for thickly traded options and for mutual funds it usually shows a previous days trade as current making it difficult to tell exactly what today’s gain/loss is. It would be great if all “day change” related values were zero’d at say 4AM ET so I knew what was really applicable to today. What makes this especially aggravating is that the app shows the last trade date if you dig into the details. But it doesn’t take this into account of daily valuation changes. As a stretch goal it would be great if one could connect with brokerages and import transactions so no data entry was required but if the above were fixed I’d be happy enough. If one is only trading stock and ETFs then this is probably a great app for monitoring portfolio performance, but if one is trading options then this becomes fairly cumbersome to use.
