Fun game, but overhyped and disappointing – Game Dev Tycoon Review

I bought this because the ratings were so high. A 4.9 rated game??! Wow, must be awesome. But, that rating made me expect way too much. In the end, I found it very unpolished and simple. I played through it a few times, but often I was frustrated by lack of functionality. Just simple things like descriptions would be nice (like what is ‘video playback’? What is an ‘abstract’ game? Are research skills useful for staff to have?). Another frustrating part was not having a history of actions, reports, and outcomes. Some of the constraints are silly. Like, why can’t I hire more than 6 people? Why can’t I be developing two games at once? Why do I need ‘research points’ to train my staff? And, some functionality just doesn’t work. Like, why does spending $100K on recruitment yield the same quality staff as spending $2M? Also, the time goes by too quickly making some decisions useless. For example, don’t try to target consoles because they often disappear from the market before you can finish a game. All in all, a fun game for a couple days. But, it lacked the sophistication, complexity, and polish to give it much replay value for me.
