Hard to grasp – Congo Merc Review

I quite enjoyed Vietnam '65, so figured I would give this game, also a look at cold-war counter-insurgency, a look as well. Unfortunately, it doesn't play nearly as well. Vietnam 65 was designed specifically as a tablet game, and it takes advantage of all that the format offers. Congo Merc was a board game, and it's adaptation to iOS is pretty awkward. I have a feeling there's a good game in there, but damned if I can figure out how to play it. The "rules" are nowhere near complete, and reading them from beginning to end is a hopeless task. Ditto for the tutorial: I went through the whole thing twice, and still wasn't sure how to play the game. A better approach would be something like Tigris and Euphrates, that walks you through an actual play of the game. As is, there are certain basic things I just can't get to work properly, such as air insertion, air movement, and recon. It's not clear how Ops are spent either. Movement itself is difficult enough, and it's often not clear which areas a unit can or cannot reach. Clearly there are terrain factors it work, but that is not well explained either. I've encountered other bugs, like not being able to select a group at all, even though it is clearly there on the map. I don't think the game is necessarily all that hard, it's just not explained clearly, and the UI is buggy and awkward. With a little work, it could certainly be improved.
