Such a Paradox of a Game! – Moxy High 2 (Part 1) Review

+Please note: This is an overview look at both "Moxy High 2" part 1 & part 2 since the story lines are connected. "Moxy High 2" is a visual novel that takes place in…well…high school. Straight up high school drama stories don’t often attract me, but I figured I would give this one a try since the reviews were generally good and I liked the fact that there was a “band geek” in it (not many of these HS stories bring them into the story for some reason). I can tell you, I really liked the artwork. it was a nice blend of the best of both Japanese and Western art qualities. The attention to detail…especially in emotional expressions was surprisingly well done. As to the story, it’s pretty straight forward and nothing we haven’t heard before. BUT it was beautifully executed and well paced. A lot of what happens in the tale was quite believable and relatable, too. And the characters are quite memorable or at least enjoyable. But remember, this is a sequel…so some of the set up has been done in the prequel for some things. But, as a standalone story, it fairs well. Interestingly enough, for a younger player, the story will be sweet…but for a more mature player, there is quite a bit more depth and meaning than what one would expect from a story like this. MINI-GAMES: Ok, this one was a mixed bag for me. Some of the games were enjoyable, but a fair amount were plain frustrating. In fact, I skipped some of the games (you can spend in-game currency to skip the games…you can earn the currency by completing other games that you can do). Ok…the ads…yeah…they happen A LOT (as in 10-30 second video commercials). I mean, I got used to it eventually. But they shouldn’t have the ads pop up in the middle of a mini-game (it pauses the game, btw…so you don’t have to worry about the clock since some games are timed). But maybe, if there is some way…the ads should be done either before and/or at the end of each chapter. I think most people are annoyed not so much with the abundance of ads, but the fact that the ads are intrusive. I, personally, didn’t mind the ads except for the fact that they kept popping up during game play. But all in all, it was the storyline that kept this game in a favorable light, for me. Oh and as a helpful tip…after you complete part 1…go to the “download part 2” chapter to get the password that unlocks the final chapter of part 2. By the way, you can play the game without having to connect to the internet or 3G.
