Ultima IV on it's own is 5 stars, but if you port it to the iPhone/iPad and don't bother to test for bugs and crashes because you want to use it as a marketing ploy to get us to play your piece of crap cash shop Ultima then you get 1 star. Post patch - crashes when I try to enter any shrines...saves did NOT carry over. This port is not worth your time. Nostalgic for old ultima games? Let me help you out. Google any of these: XU4 Exult The exodus project DosBox + abandonware

This version seems to be faithful to the old C64 version that i played through twice on my C64 about 25 years ago. It's strangely compelling even after all this time. Don't look at online guides and experience the game just as it was for the best enjoyment. Yes, that means take notes and talk to villagers! Anyhow, i plan to play this all the way through, but there are a few issues, one major one. The big issue is that the game locks up every so often entering battle or a town. The autosave feature unfortunately freezes you at this point so you have to load an actual save. If you play this version save often. The other issues are minor - as in the footsteps are loud and sometimes distorted, and then there can be a little lag on the movement controls, but not enough to stop me from playing. Thanks for this version!

I was so excited to play Ultima IV again. I have tried version 1.3 and 1.4. I am willing to forgive some small things like keyboard lag, distorted footstep sounds, and black and white dungeon graphics. However, the game crashes RELENTLESSLY as other reviewers have mentioned. I have started over three times and each time after about 4 hours, the game will crash no matter what- entering a town, moon gate, or combat (regardless of who initiates). Renders the game UNPLAYABLE. Even loading prior saves, force quitting app, and restarting iPad do not work. I am really holding out hope for the next version to fix this, because I would desperately love to play this game again. This series was a defining part of my adolescence. Please do it justice! :-) PS I would also like to see support for a Bluetooth keyboard, perhaps eliminating the onscreen keyboard, and thereby make the play field bigger. Also, add an option to turn off footstep sounds and keep the background music. I noticed that turning off the music ("V" key) makes the footsteps normal. They seem to be interfering with each other somehow. I am sure most players would rather hear the score than the footsteps.
Awesome, but stuck in a crashing box

Awesome game. Brings back great memories But after 20-30mins, my character is stuck in a box outside Britannia and if i leave the box, the game hangs. Tried everything... Will bump to 5 stars if/when they fix it! UPDATE: new character, but eventually started crashing whenever entering a town or if AI initiates battle.

After playing the game for a time, The game freezes and nothing can be entered into. I have played the game before on the Commodore 64 many years ago and I like the game very much. It would be nice to play here on the iPhone it would bring back many many memories.
Best RPG ever; crashes often

I played this for quite some time before I started noticing the crashes everyone else has been seeing. Now, trying to enter any town crashes the game. Also, the direction keys register two moves per tap quite often--something which has gotten worse over time. Please fix this! I was falling in live with this game all over again! I want to see Ultimas 3 & 5 as well!!
App freezes please fix

Yes, awesome revival of this game, but no good if it freezes. Rebooting the ipad does nothing. It started freezing once I acquired ship (frigate). Once I got off the ship and tried entering lord British's castle, it froze. I restarted the game and it was stuck frozen, it just says "entering castle".

This is a pretty good port to iOS. I still prefer to play xU4 on my Mac and PC, or even the original game on my working C64, but I'm certainly happy to have it available on iOS, as well. I did encounter a serious bug in an earlier version, but I reported the issue to the developer, and they've been really responsive, sending multiple status updates until the issue was resolved. Many thanks! I wish the splash screens for the new Ultima: QotA game didn't show up everytime I launch this app, but its a small price to pay.
