The art of synesthesia:
As trippy psychedelic synesthesia art, this app is an exploration of the relationship between our audio and visual senses, and the nature of our consciousness.

The science of the senses:
Your eyes contain 3 colour receptive cells, each having different sensitivities within the perceptible light spectrum. At the same time, your ears have different sensitivities over the audible spectrum. In addition, our eyes and ears re-adjust depending on the intensity of light and sound. Using real data on the nature of our sensory organs, the ambient sound spectrum picked up by your device's microphone is converted into light in real-time, so you can for the first time see the colour of your voice, music, nature and environment.

This app forms part of a larger project of synesthesia and sound visualisation. For more information, apps and more details about the science involved, please visit the blog site:

WhAt?! This turns OFF your internet radio! Don't bother!

So let me get this straight: this is a visualizer for my music, but if I want to listen to the DiFm that I am a paid subscriber to, the visualizer goes out of its way to shut OFF my internet music stream? Why? What possible purpose would this action logically serve? But, you want to turn ON my microphone which is directed where there ISN'T music? (Umm..wearing earbuds like everyone else on the planet...) I can tell you've made a great visualizer here, you just need to add some options to accommodate different listener's varying methods of listening to their tunes. Especially the most common ones! Not a whole lot of people play music loudly from their iPhone speaker while it sits on a table. If ANYbody... And the mandatory blocking of Internet radio is beyond ridiculous.

One of my favorites it comes to pure aesthetics

The subject says it all really, I'm a big fan of this app. Any app that takes sound/music and turns it into a visual representation in realtime is very entertaining and really does something for me... Too wet, I've been using this one for years and it's one that I constantly come back to. Especially after unlocking the additional features by way of "finding the aliens" lol thanks for a job very well done, dev!

This app needs an update
Synesthesia Trip

This app stoped working for me. This app was awesome and the only good one I can find on the App Store. It is now a bit disappointing to go into the app to see nothing but a black screen. Please do fix it.

I was surprised at how good this was! Very responsive to sounds. As a long time user of Winamp's Milkdrop, I enjoy seeing my music and encourage the developer to continue developing Soundcolour's patterns. Many thanks.

Wonderful app

This is one of those apps that pushes the envelope on what is possible with mobile phones and technology. Thank you Dr. Outram for developing awesome apps like this.

I got this thinking I could visualize my music, which technically I can, but only if I play it through the iPhone speaker so that the iPhone mic picks it up. Please add an option to react to the iPhone audio directly so not only can I use it with headphones, but so it receives a high quality, accurate representation of the music.
