Gumi’s greed is legendary status, but this is a good game

Roosh77

I could easily write a mini term paper on this game, but I’ll try to be (kind of) brief: Gumi is a notoriously greedy developer, and this game is no exception. The prices and *real* drop rates are ridiculous and fool nobody who has been around for a while. Things have gotten particularly bad again (the game’s meta quality tends to be cyclical, as far as f2p viability, new unit power creep, good deals, etc.) with step 1 pulls the equivalent of basically $30 worth of currency, and trust me, you ain’t getting a new unit on step 1. Their supposed counter to this is a single step, 80% off coupon roughly 1-2 a month, and the ability to daily quest grind out about 180-200 gems a day. So you can go ahead and do the math about how long it takes to finish a single 7 or 9 step banner. With all of that said, this is still possibility the deepest, most rewarding game on the entire App Store. Old units get actual refreshes and buffs (slowly but it does happen), something insanely rare in these games. There is a crazy buttload of content, especially when you’re first starting the game, with main stories, side stories and side side stories. Whatever time you invest will (usually) result in a gain somewhere along the lines. Just be forewarned: the difficulty/learning curve is immense. Each unit has on average 10-12 or more skills, with gear and mementos (like “battle cards” or special equipment or runes in other games, meant to give min/max and endgame players something to augment) adding more. You might not come off “auto” play for your first 80 account levels. But it’s expected, everyone goes through it, and it is satisfying once you start being able to manually control things. So, we have a 4.5/5 game with a 1.5/5 developer, but I’ll bump it up another star out of the fondness for the game you develop over time and the amount of depth that is there for you to geek out over. Wow, that wasn’t brief at all, was it? Go give it a shot!

The Best of the Best

Midorrian2

I’ll try to keep this short. I started playing after Smosh recommended it and I’ve been hooked. I don’t have a lot of time, but I’m able to do dailies quickly, get great units, and max their power. I’m kicking butt and taking names. Then my phone died and I had to get a new one. When I thought I had lost my account, they helped me recover it, no issues! I love the crossovers with other properties like anime and games. I totally geeked out when they did the Final Fantasy crossover. I saw a previous reviewer say they didn’t repeat these special events, but that’s not true. This is the second time they did the Final Fantasy event. I see other reviewers complaining that the game is pay to win, but... no. I don’t have money to spend on the game and I’ve got great stuff. You can literally earn gems every day, way more than other games, and bonus gems each week. Once a month you get a discount ticket so you spend fewer gems. I always scoffed at these kinds of games, but I really enjoy it! I recommend ignoring the complainers (there’s always some even if the thing is perfect) and try the game. I and my kids play together. Love it!

I’m not mad, I’m disappointed.

Just up front, I loved this game. Played everyday for two years. I consider the time I started as the prime of this game. I even spent money on it from time to time, which I still hate myself for. When I first discovered this game, it was perfect. The developers were constantly giving updates and communicating on what’s coming up, and the gacha system was fair. Over the past year, however, I have noticed a terrible and unfortunate turn in GUMI. The YouTube channel stopped updates, the amount of free things decreased, the prices increased, and the amount of content locked behind paywalls increased. A game I loved has turned into a cash grab, dying under its own imposing failures. If you want a better alternative to this I suggest dragon ball legends or duel links. Unfortunately they are tied to brands and therefore have little chance for crossovers, but they are incredibly fair in giving out premium currency and you don’t have to pay to get to content. If by some chance someone from GUMI is reading this, just know Ima not mad, I’m disappointed. This company has lost its soul, and I’m afraid to know whether it can change.

Very Solid

As a long time and returning player I thought it was time to make a review for newer players. Overall the game wins my heart with its excellent usage of game mechanics. The starter bonuses are amazing for new players to max a unit and use that unit to clear most of the content in the game. Some aspects of the game can appear pay to win but you do get enough gems from story content to pull for new units to overcome obstacles. Through playing this game for years and recently starting anew, the game is in my eyes one of the best tactical rpgs out there for mobile

Gambling w/ real money

Don’t ever buy any gems. There are opportunities to get characters and gears that you may want but it is going to cost you plenty of gems and they are not cheap and it’s still based on chance. You can sometimes get ok characters by pure luck. I have been playing for about 3 years and there are literally dozens of characters that are locked to me, these are some of the best characters in the game too. No surprise. The best way to beat the system is to save all your gems and try for the best chance to get a character that you want. You might have to save a few months or a whole year. But, good luck trying to max out the character that is another challenge after you finally get that one good character. The character is so underpowered it is basically useless. Play the game have fun but don’t buy any gems it is legal child gambling. You are always buying a chance to get something and most of the time you will be disappointed. Save yourself frustration, false hope, and your hard earned money.

Fun while it lasted

Not sure what happened between updating the app and updating my software, but all my progress is gone. Months of gameplay, and I can’t get back to the place that I left off. This, and the constant “___ mb of content needs to be downloaded before you can continue” is ridiculous. Every 5 minutes you have to download something new. What are the point of the app updates if it’s going to continue to ask you to download additional updates that frequently??
