First I tried merging my whole contact list all at once. Luckily I did back everything up beforehand so I was able to re-import the contacts that were COMPLETELY DELETED. Then I tried carefully “manually” merging a few contacts one by one and it only took a few contacts down my list before it “merged” one of my best friend’s contact info down to only an email - that is, it had no name or no phone number. I had to email him to get his phone number back.

Gee, found a bunch of duplicate contacts but would only merge 10 before asking for $

Duplicates! I have 4 of every contact now? People I have not spoken to in years. Deleting this app.
