does not include intermediate 5K plan

Istinaletheia

App does not include intermediate 5K plan, which was my whole reason for purchasing it. Annoying because now I have to use the book anyway, defeating the purpose of the app. If you are starting to run again at intermediate level (or beginning - the beginner 5k is missing too!) then just stick with the book and do your own calculations.

Good companion to book

JonSuss

This is a good companion to the book and might even replace it if you already understand the principles in the book. To those frustrated by the supposedly too-demeaning opening long run: read the book. You are supposed to begin these programs with a base level of fitness. 8 miles is not too much to ask.

Seems like it's only half done

SlowMomLawyer

It's nice to have the training modules on my phone. But you cannot use this App without referencing the book. For example, none of the cross-training or strength exercises are in the program -- just a reference to a page in the book! If I wanted to carry the book everywhere , I wouldn't have paid for the app!!!!!

Revising review/rating: Missing features July 4 2014

0fix

I am revising my review 'missing features' posted on July 4, 2014. I am not able to delete or edit it. This app is great and does have the features I was looking for with the exception of one item. The app does show the final goal and can back into a goal on the calculated screen. I originally looked for these features on the start screen and training program schedule. The only other suggestion is to fill in the training criteria instead of referencing a page in the book.

Great app, very useful for the BEST training plan out there.

JeffB.

Update: I would also like to see a summary screen that can be printed or emailed with all the weeks on one page. Would be helpful to pin up on the wall instead of constantly referencing the app. Either that or make the app more feedback/ goal oriented so it is worth referencing daily. I was just sitting down to do all the math, cross referencing tables, etc. for an upcoming marathon and get everything entered into my calendar when it occurred to me "I wonder if there's an app for that?" Sure enough the new FIRST companion app. Great! Thanks! One thing I would add is support for populating the calendar and/or viewing in a calendar format, setting which days are run days, etc. Also it would be helpful if selected race goal times populated on the setup page for a given calculated 5k pace. This would avoid flipping back and forth between setup and main screens.

The paces are unreasonable

choosing a nickname is dumb

The app functions well but the paces it suggests aren't feasible. You put in your latest race time and it calculates your workouts. The first week it has you running 1 min/mile (or more) faster. It doesn't get any more reasonable as the plan goes on. I wish i could return it.

Needs more

New to the program

It would be nice to include the 5k novice and 5k intermediate programs from the book, as well as the key movements and key stretches and the strength training movements. It's the bare bones of the program, would like to see some more substance to this app.

The half-marathon training schedule is different from the book!

LA Hapa

I already own the book, but calculating the paces for different training programs has aways been time consuming. That's why I downloaded this app. However, when I set it up for a half marathon training program, I discovered that it's different from what's in the book. It's an 18 week program in the book, but only 16 weeks in the app. That seems to be source of the problem. Week 16 in the app is the same as week 18 in the book, 15=17, and 14=16. But then, week 13 in the app is the same as week 14 in the book, 12=13, and so on until week 8 in the app, which has a different interval workout than the book's week 9, but is otherwise the same. Week 7 in the app calls for 4x1200 instead of 6. The book and app remain separated by 1 week until the app's week 3, which is similar to the book's week 3 except for a different interval workout. Weeks 2 and 1 are the same in the book and app. I don't know if these are errors, or if they represent intentional changes to the half marathon program since my edition of the book was published (2007). If they were intentional changes, it would be nice if they disclosed that up front. But as long as you don't might a slightly different training schedule, it looks like it will do the job. I just wish it would calculate the interval paces in min/mile instead of just the time to complete each interval.

Love it

Sparky_007

Use it for every race I do. Nice if it fit with the iHpneX screen, but not critical.

Nice companion but unstable in iOS 11.2

bigdaddygo

Great for calculations, but crashes every time I hit the “more” button. Can’t wait to train with this program though.
