Must Have Strategy Game

LutraMage

Like all great games, this one takes a little time to get to grips with. At first it may seem like you have little control over what happens, but if you persevere it suddenly becomes clear that tactics and planning really make a difference. The interface is good (although an 'undo' button would be very helpful as it is all too easy to think you are giving an order to a new unit while you are still selecting the previous one). This is an example of where gaming on mobile devices should be heading. 100% to Slitherine (again)!

Really?

Maybe I missed the Kool-Aid on the entrance to justify these five star reviews but where is the 'end turn' button? How can such a misstep from a UX perspective get such a blatant pass?

Fantastic wargame

JayJack77

Amazing wargame covering a colorful period of military history/not often seen in the strategy market. The interplay of units is fascinating and the battles engrossing. I disagree with some who criticize the length of the battles, as there is a robust mission editor that allows you to create just about any sized engagement you want. Most of my favorite fights have been 30min skirmishes with a handful of units. 'Hats off to the developers for a great game.

Long Addictive Battles

Wiener Bud

Good for everyone. Long, extensive battles that are hard to walk away from. So good. I’m not, by any means, a die-hard war gamer, nor do I have any knowledge about the time period, nor did I download this game thinking I would get so into it. I really love it… I recommend to everyone… even those who are intimidated by the look and feel. It takes a bit of time to learn the troop types, at least for me, but it’s worth it.

Don't buy

The game needs work.

Perfect representation of P&S warfare. Especially good army detail. Hard, but rewarding.

Excellent!

l'Emperor

I am an avid wargamer and know a little about this period, but not an expert. I thoroughly enjoyed this game. It is the best wargame I have played on my iPad by far. It is very good at recreating the period feel. One must be very careful of committing your troops to melee. They will be locked in melee until resolved and even if they win there is a good chance they will pursue the broken enemy off the field (or at least so far that they have effectively taken themselves out of the game) especially cavalry! Bit of a learning curve. One gripe is I wish there was an undo as the interface can be finicky. For example, I have selected artillery units to fire and they limber instead, making them useless for the turn. Highly recommended!

An oddly stupid game

Oldgamer38

It is puzzling why a company would program such great historical detail in a game and then ignore all those same rules when you play. Cannons miss stationary Tercios 60% of the time (you will get tired of shooting only to see zeros while computer artillery hits your cavalry as they gallop), charging Tercios can get disrupted by cavalry (dealing with cavalry was one of the reasons they were created and were the charging unit after all), and melee battle results are little better than a coin toss. I deleted the game when 200 detached musketeers charged and disrupted my experienced 2000 strong Tercio. The battle results in this game are so ridiculous and childlike it isn't even possible to get frustrated. It's just stupid really. Update. I downloaded the game a second time just to see if I had been missing something. The mechanics seem to favor the computer (why can't I shoot a Tercio from behind while it's engaged in melee?) but the scenario designers themselves are the biggest problem. You are outnumbered in almost every battle, often with inferior quality troops, and most combat resolves into "AI unit does 30 damage , your unit does 22". There is the game in a nutshell; you are outnumbered by many thousands (even playing a quick skirmish) and your troops will often just exchange 30 people for 22 (that is pretty demoralizing math). It is so odd for a company to create such a one sided game (why make people play on the losing side of historical battles so often?) but I guess that is what enables it to burn so many hours of a person's time. I want to like the game as a fan of military history, and that period of time, but can not understand why the battles were setup/chosen the way they were (an attempt to make them maddeningly difficult/addictive?). The battle setups and selections turn what could have been a promising game into a string of depressing engagements (that you will often fight outnumbered and with poorly trained troops).

I own several Slitherines software. This s very good software but currently does not work its IOS11. Waiting for update before purchasing any other applications from Slitherines.

When will an update for IOS 11.2 come out?

SgtOgre

This as one of my favorite games, but it won’t work on newer IOS updates for an iPad. When will the update be out?
