A great tool for all levels of poultry lovers, whether new, 4-H, urban farmer, teacher, or simply chicken enthusiast extraordinaire . Pickin’ Chicken is the perfect tool for expanding your green and sustainable living lifestyle.
Yeah, it's fun, but for what you get it should be a free app. Not very robust, there's just not a lot to it. I used it once and got all the information I needed. Not enough breeds. There should be more info on chicken husbandry to make worthwhile.
Like it fun to play with I do have to say should b a lil cheaper for the info it has.
I bought this app when I was first getting into chicken-keeping, and I made most of my initial choices based on the breed information provided. A couple of years into chicken-keeping and I've found significant errors and misinformation. One is error "Maran", when the correct name is "Marans", whether singular or plural. Misinformation exists such as statements that certain breeds are not good foragers, or don't free range. As an experienced chicken owner, all of our multiple breeds both free range over our property and forage every single edible item they find. In addition, there is other misinformation regarding egg production, egg size and temperament. We have Barred (Plymouth) Rock, Rhode Island Red, Production Red, Delaware, Australorp, Ameraucana, Sussex, Barnevelder, Orpington, and Wyandotte. My advice is to research everything you can get your hands on, talk to other chicken people and don't make your decisions based on this app. The app seems to have been written by one person with limited experience - Mother Earth News is usually dead-on, but missed the mark this time.
Overall, it's a great app, but some improvements could be made. Perhaps you could make it so that you can pick chickens based on climate and personality? I think this would be useful for people like me who are going into this as a hobby, rather than for profit, or to get a certain kind of egg. The app is very user friendly, though. Easy to use and has nice pictures to go with almost all of the breeds. Thanks!
This is a descent app but I'm waiting on the one for cattle and other livestock. Your app is so simple and basic.... can you have it completed by next week?
Great app. Have used it over the last two years to start my flock and to bring in new color. Hope to see more breeds and maybe links to hatcheries.
Fun app, but very slim pickings. I'd like to see it full of breeds. I would love to see cow, sheep, rabbit, & goat apps too. Hobby Farms are popping up everywhere & so many are looking for info for their first time farming adventures.
I love this app, very helpful and informative , the only complaint is that it needs more breeds pictures, at least pictures of both sexes of each breed, more pics and iPad compatible and it will be worth the 5 stars.
