With brewing in a bag, you want to mash with as much water as possible, to end up with as much wort, because you aren't sparging.
Most calculators use your ideal mash thickness to calculate how much water to use- this shows you the maximum amount of water to heat up without running over once you put the grain in.
This application will also calculate how hot your strike water should be to hit your mash temperature.
Been just guessing at this until now. Does what it says it does. The perfect fit.
Calculating strike temp and volume is very important. Great idea for an app. Anyone who says this simple but powerful tool is bad, does not understand the importance of this step. That said, a statement about whether the mash tun was preheated or not and perhaps a way of dealing with thermal mass of mash tun could be done. Disregarding this detail can lead to significant mash temp changes.
Yeah, the "basic and lame" review is irrelevant. Beer has four ingredients – pretty basic, but not lame. Clearly, it's all about the details. I like this app but I'm not sure about the strike temp. With most BIAB where the kettle is also the mash tun, the kettle will be the same temp as the strike water. This point seems to be lost in this app, and as a result instructs you to use a higher strike temp than is optimal.
This does what it is supposed to do. The strike temp and volume may not be totally accurate, but it is a good starting point. I have used this app in the last 10 or so batches and have not had an issue yet. Thank you!
App works pretty well, but needs to accommodate larger brew kettles and quantities. App is geared toward home brewers that brew smaller batches.
I like this app but I think it would be better if you could calculate by batch size instead of kettle size. I have a 15.5 gallon kettle but I only plan on doing 5 gallon batches.
