I've recently started teaching myself Spanish, and this app is definitely a handy tool to have. It's got grammar notes and glossaries for English to Spanish and vice versa. It's meant to both help English speakers learn Spanish, and Spanish speakers, English. It includes pronunciation keys for both, and a favorites tab where you can quickly reference words that you need to be able to look up quickly. There is also a history tab where you can reference translations you looked up previously. I definitely recommend this app to English speakers teaching themselves Spanish. Since I can't yet read the Spanish side of things, I'm uncertain if it's as handy for Spanish speakers learning English, as far as notes and things go. Anyway, 5 stars.

Save you money! I was looking for a good dictionary to help with my study of Spanish and I was excited to see the Oxford dictionary published as an app. Wow, was I ever disappointed. I've been using Apple apps for five or so years and this is the worst rip off I have ever encountered thus far. If you are in the the market for a good Spanish dictionary, then Word Magic or Dict Box are far better choices. Either of these are much more comprehensive than Oxford and they are much less expensive. Oxford is so cheap that it doesn't even have a pronunciation guide or audible assist.

Superior dictionary for Spanish-English nuance.

Woah, the first reviewer is WWWWWWAAAAAAAYYYYYY off. There is no other dictionary published in English that actually helps translation as much as this one. Where this resource has always excelled is giving nuance. Why prefer one word over another? The OSE goes into exhaustive detail. OSE also gives localized words according to Latin America, Spain, and even particular countries on occasion. As to pronunciation, whereas it is true that there are no Spanish phonetic guide for particular words, the pronunciation guide is pretty exhaustive for standard Spanish, and even gives the regional variations for ll etc. perhaps the reviewer is not aware that Spanish has far more uniform pronunciation than English? The English side does give IPA phonetic guides. It is true that a sound sample would assist in catching the subtle differences between things like the pure o of Spanish and the typical diphthong o of an English word like goat not to mention the English short o like fox. Does that justify a 1 star rating? No. As far as dual-language dictionaries go this one is the standard whereby all others ought to be judged, and often found wanting. Having looked over the images on Word Magic it is also an impressive resource, no question, but it's not the standard. I will also agree that $20 is rather expensive which is why I held off so long in buying it.

Update ruined the app

This was a four to five star app before today's update was installed. Now the search option in the bottom task bar has disappeared and there is no way to just browse the dictionary entries anymore. How is that improvement??? A dictionary that doesn't let users browse is completely worthless. Add this functionality again and it's four to five stars.

The January 6th update brought the word list back to the home screen making this the only dictionary you need once again.

Major issues with the new GUI

The new GUI that's been introduced as of the latest update is pretty problematic and clunky. When typing in a desired term, if an exact match is found, it will be listed alone as an exact match with another list of suggestions. The labels "match" and "suggestions" take up a lot of screen space, and an option to not have a separate suggestions list would be appreciated so that any terms that start with the entered search term will be listed alphabetically. Speaking of screen real estate, the latest update has introduced large buttons at the bottom of the main screen with advertisements for other apps made by the developer. For such an expensive app, this is nothing short of an insult to the customers. There is no reason to not move the advertisements off of the main screen. It needs to be done so more of the space is available for the returned matches for search queries. Another flaw is that when one is scrolling through the definitions in a term's page, the search bar will disappear and trying to get it to reappear is more trouble than it should be. The search bar should remain visible at all times, and it should be reduced in size slightly, to give more room for the definitions. One feature that is missing, that I would suggest to the dev team behind the app is to introduce bidirectional search queries so that one does not need to specify which language is being searched for the entered term. It would add ease of use and reduce clutter.

Problems with 8/1/15 update

I am a Spanish student who uses the "favorites" list to study vocabulary. I choose Spanish words with which I am unfamiliar, label of them with their English equivalent, and then study them. Unfortunately, the new update does not allow me to return to the same spot in my favorites list after reading the definition of a word. It always takes me back to the very top of the list. Since I have, literally, hundreds of words in my list, this defect makes the list essentially unusable for this purpose. Next, the new update does not allow me to edit the label for the word. Therefore, if, for example, I choose the Spanish word "despreocupado" And I want to label it "carefree," I am unable to do that. One of the wonderful things about this dictionary used to be the ability to make a set of virtual flashcards and study vocabulary from it. That is now not possible. How unfortunate. An update should strive to make the application better, not worse.
