Reimagining performance through cutting-edge AUUG
GothiCello

I am using this excellent app and hardware to completely change my performance style. The AUUG system allows me to sing and play virtual instruments in a visually engaging way. Now I can bring the Cello back into my original ideas, as well as lots of other sounds. Why lug around lots of heavy gear that can get stolen or damaged? Out of the box, the AUUG is fun and I quickly got up and running with Garage Band and IK Multimedia's SampleTank. I am looking forward to exploring all the flexibility and different configurations.

Fun! ... But can be frustrating

It's not entirely intuitive in the way it connects to GarageBand or even more frustrating to another computer. Some of the other features, like adjusting the keys to fit your hand size can be difficult to find, and there are other internal controls that I don't know what they do. So it could really use a decent manual or online instruction. That said, once I got it up and running it's pretty amazing. Running it through Logic on my laptop you can combine all kinds of sounds using the exs24 sampler or Kontakt Player and get some incredible effects. One thing I'd like to see in the next version. Since some instruments like the GarageBand Smart Strings can be setup to play chords by pressing a single key, it would be great if the AUUG could interface with that. Currently, even if the smart strings are setup for chords the AUUG still only plays single notes on each key. Additional programmability would be nice as well. There are a lot of available scales included, but the ability to set each key to a specific note would be helpful for doing more chromatic things and also when setting it up to use premade drum kit samples. But overall it's very cool and there are a lot of options. Some of the ones I requested may even be in there and I just don't know how to access them yet. Again, a detailed manual would probably help

Difficult to Work With
Masqued Dreamer

It's not user friendly. The hand device doesn't fit well even after adjusting the keys. It's definitely got a learning curve. I had so much hope for this device, hopefully with time it will live up to my expectations. I will say customer support has been spectacular, they have been incredibly helpful throughout this learning process. I do agree with what another reviewer said, that this really needed a booklet or instructions in the package instead of putting videos up online one at a time when problems arise.

Not good.

I've been playing the violin for 3+ years and in my opinion, this is terrible. You can basically play only 2 notes. Also, the case is $150 which is WAY to overpriced. Don't waste your time.

Great multi-dimensional controller!
Grumpynow2

Being able to independently change three different aspects of a sound with one hand motion is pretty cool. Being able to do that while simultaneously playing notes with that same hand makes for a really expressive controller. As with any good controllers that offer a lot of flexibility, you will need to spend a little bit of rtfm time if you want to to get the most out of it, but the documentation and videos are great, and the dev team seems to have been very responsive to questions in the forum.

Brilliant

This is so awesome and the possibilities are endless. It’s been great using it with my TC Helicon Voicelive Touch 2 and for automation in Logic X. The best thing in production is being able to map multiple gestures and when you’re in ‘touch’ mode, you can actually write all gestures at once. Feels a lot more expressive and makes this specific part of producing a lot faster. Getting used to gesturing and feeling the parameters takes some getting used to so I would recommend being patient with it when first trying it out. Once you get the hang of it, it’s really amazing. Also diving in with it in Ableton, awesome stuff!!

It makes me happy!
transco

My wife came in and saw me struggling over this review. She pointed out that I have been trying to write it for weeks, and asked why I was having so much trouble. Before I could answer she said: "Just tell them how you feel when you play it and why". OK, I feel happy when I play the Motion Synth. Why? Well I don't have any formal music training or innate ability, and have severe arthritis in my hands which precludes me from playing most conventional instruments but, thanks to the Motion Synth hardware and software, I can make music and that... makes me happy.

Kudos to transco
