Crashtastic

Meat byproduct

I instantly downloaded the app when I heard John Gruber from Daring Fireball talking about the app on Twitter. I wish I could say that I love this app too, but this app has literally never worked for me. No, seriously, it crashes every time. I’m on an 11” iPad Pro running 12.3.1 and it crashes shortly after the “Processing” screen. Every time!

Nice app, but it used over 24GB of cellular data during my indexing run (done on 4G), which was unexpected to say the least!

Please support detecting CJK characters

Many of my photos contain CJK information that I need to search, and manually tagging takes too much time. Please support OCR on CJK characters, and that will be a great help.

Does as promised

Bug: bookmarking a post prevents it from showing up in search results Another issue is that if you have to many photos and forget to annotate it, going back to it later is difficult because there’s no tiny gallery view where you can scroll through several images at simultaneously. You can annotate any photo in your library and either use spotlight or search within the app. Tags would be nice, but that’s not what the app promised, so 5 stars. Bug: placing the green rectangle over the cancel button prevents the cancel button from working. The rectangle must be shrunken in order to reuse the cancel button. It would be nice if that app would simply allow you to exit the photo at any time and just remember the area of the green rectangle instead of forcing the user to remove it to exit viewing the picture. Perhaps in a future update. This app could be big; hopefully catalyst will help make it even more useful. There is not help or support button in the app. I hope the $8,000 they gave for the DF sponsorship was worth it.

Indexing is slow ...

I’m hoping this will benefit from recently announced iOS 13 background tasks... When I start the app it shows the number of photos it’s “scanned” but the countdown for total photos resets. With 105,000+ photos it’s hard to tell if this will ever finish. More than a week later I’ve gotten close to 25% ... [update after 1.5.1] Now when I open app the progress shows what looks like an accurate count of total images scanned. But the blue highlight below that is gone. A few hours later and the count of items with text went from 944 to 949 ... but the total number scanned hasn’t changed ... An app like this would greatly benefit from a stats screen... a chart so 3 metrics over time: Images with text Images scanned Images total (at that point in time) Also, a preference to set whether new images get scanned before the ‘backlog’ ... And information/ preference for whether scanning backlog is chronological order or not. [update after 1.5.2] ... stuck?? The progress doesn’t change, the total count hasn’t changed but the number of images with has gone up. No indication of what percentage of images have been checked or how many more remain. So no results could mean text exists but weeks later the image with text might still be in the queue. [update after 1.6.6] Per the developer, I reinstalled the app ... and I’m on the latest iOS release with an iPhone 11 Pro. The processing is taking about a second per photo with the app open; and no progress when I’m in any other app. So a minimum of 60 hours to go — though the app still hasn’t finished calculating the ETA. But that is if I leave the app open for 2 1/2 days. I keep trying the app because it’s a great idea and frankly should be in iOS and would take no time if processing happened with each photo. But if you’re expecting to search and find a photo of a contract from a few years ago that’s on iCloud .., you won’t ... at least not until the app downloads and parses every image you took. I’m beginning to think this could only work if there was a desktop “sister” app that ran and could sync an index to the phone app. I don’t know if “not found” means “doesn’t exist” & that makes it unusable for what I wanted.

Great and convenient to use!

Appreciate the on device processing and the option to disable photo library processing (which takes time).

Definitely recommend!

You can’t look at more than 1 photo or pick more than one photo at a time. The green crop sections are always on and are hideous looking- so much so you’d rather quit the app. Screenshot Hero is free and MUCH better despite taking longer to load.

Used to work perfectly — now crashes every time

This app works great and does exactly what you’d want — when it works. After trying to syncing my library on a new device, it reliably crashes after hitting some photo in my library, but there’s no way to find out which one to work around the problem
