Reviews

HUGE! with annotated games

Truly a great help for viewing openings! But the game positions are not transferable!! Poor! Making it a super help and be a major additional, having it able to copy a game position into SmallFish, a chess app by the same developer which uses Stockfish 9. If you see a position you would like to play, good luck copying it manually to SmallFish.

Needs More User Help Added!!

This app has some wonderful features but all undocumented. To make a move - tap the game board and the game advances and if you instead swipe the board, the piece moves, retreats, and again moves so you can better identify the move! Captures mimic the captures of SmallChess with a special capture animation. All these I love! Searching the huge database needs more help for users, especially if you are just exploring. If you do not know the ECO codes for the large number chess openings, there is no help. As you select (tap) on an opening variation a small window opens with a chess board, a slider to advance through the game, and a “Load Game” button. The board unfortunately does not have the pieces pre-moved that identify that opening variation, this greatly slows your search as you have to move the pieces to confirm that this is the you want to use. Why? Openings have a large multiple of small variations that each have a special name added to the openings’ base name. Unused Icons are found at the top of the “playing board” screen. One symbol is a King (crown) and pressing has no effect. And if you use Smallfish or Smallchess you are familiar with the ellipsis (...) that they both use to access other functions/options. Well, the ellipsis (...) symbol is on the upper right of the board screen and pressing it does nothing (no other options as the chess apps would present). Why is it there? Does it have a future use? Want to copy/share a board position or game, there is no means other than capturing the screen with the iPad’s own ability. BOTTOM LINE Recommended for chess tournament players only at this time! The app needs significant improvement in searching its database as chess not only has dozens of openings but also huge numbers of variations. Sharing a board position to another chess app would be great, especially if that app is Smallfish or Smallchess.
