SmallFish Chess for Stockfish

SmallFish is an open source project based on the Stockfish chess engine. It uses the latest Stockfish chess engine (Stockfish 7), rated about Elo 3280+ and is therefore one of the strongest chess apps.

Games Free Ted Wong iPhone, iPad, iPod

The app derives directly from the Stockfish iOS app and borrow code from SmallChess (another top chess app) to create stunning chess playing experience for absolutely no cost! The strongest chess app is free, something very hard to believe but it's true.

SmallFish offers you three distinct ways to improve your game. You can review your game with comments, or study how Stockfish thinks, or track your progress. You can also control the internal engine parameters.

The interface is an example of a "flatten" design - dropping of heavy textures and the addition of several new simple user interface elements.

SmallFish is simply amazing.

The absolute best chess app in the store.
CurryMe

As far as I am concerned this is the singularly best chess app in the store. I am grateful for all of the recent updates, which only make it better. Is it the most pretty? No. Is it the most social? No. Is it the easiest? No. Is it still the best by a far margin? Yes. Download immediately.

I’m learning so many openings with this and it’s great to use to cheat against your friends, very good can’t recommend it more, although I’m not sure you can use this to play online

Great app, but display keeps bugging out
SilverFire2

The display keeps bugging out where the chess board is jammed half offscreen to the top, please get this bug fixed Update: Am on iPhone 11 Max Pro, most recent update. Has happened multiple times, a few potential triggers have included: - turning on coordinates - loading positions from the ChessTactics app But unfortunately I don’t have a good way to reproduce the bug. Sometimes it resolved itsef on app restart and other times it persists, but in latter case turning off coordinates and then restarting fixes it

Best chess engine I’ve found
Figvkvucu

Easy to use and accurate. Great app.

Crashes often
Samthelamanite

Running on an iPhone 11 using iOS 14.4 and it crashes almost every time I use it. Crashes when I manually set up a board to play out or when I'm adjusting settings. I love this app and would love it to work seamlessly. The crashing is unfortunate so I can do anything to reduce the crashing, let me know. Love the board setup option, option to play as black or white, the two or three move recommendations. I would love if it told you the opening you were playing as you chose the moves.

Best Stockfish App
Aidanwalter111

This is definitely the best Stockfish app out there. Highly recommend. The only problem I’ve noticed is that the best move arrow often does not match with the actual best move as provided by the analysis. Also, sometimes the three lines of analysis are not ordered by their actual strength. Other than that, amazing app with very active development.

Opponent always runs out of time.
Fprwsl

No matter what I do in the options, I always win because my opponent runs out of time. The game continues, however, even though the clock is 0.00 so that’s a good thing. This issue starts immediately: playing white pieces, I play 1. d4, black always immediately plays either d5 or f6; I play 2. c4 . . . . black “thinks” 20-40 seconds before making a second move, usually c5. Really? As long as 40 seconds to make the second move. And that “thinking” exists throughout the game. For instance, black offers a queen trade: I accept. Then black deliberates 20, 30, etc. seconds whether or not to capture my queen when there is obvious nothing to deliberate. Hardly a realistic or enjoyable scenario.

What good is it if it keeps crashing?
deepmodem

This could be a wonderful program if it didn’t always crash and die. I have an ipad pro with plenty of storage and using the latest os. I’ve tried deleting the app and reinstalling the latest versions many times. Either the game will completely crash, or it won’t move and the clock will run out unless I force it to move. Currently it is unusable, hence the one star.

Good Overall

This chess app, unlike some others, has a pretty strong engine compared to others. As of now, the current engine being used is Stockfish 13 with NNUE. There are pros and cons I would like to mention though. Note that I use an iPhone 8+ and some cons do not exist on more recent phones. Pros -Very strong engine -Customizable board and pieces -Edit the time it takes for the computer to move -Has a "Blunder Check" feature -Analysis comes with graph evaluation and bar evaluation -Engine line tells you how far away from checkmate if there is a forced checkmate opportunity -Easy gestures to redo or undo moves -The user can play both sides (useful if you want to have a chess match with someone next to you) -Customizable engine difficulty -Adjustable engine analysis time, engine threads, and has a HashTable for an even stronger engine -Compatible with a tablebase -Option to use the opening book -Has a hint feature where it shows you what the best move in the position is -Option to show visuals on the board (last move made, legal moves, etc.) -Changeable graph (default, curved, histogram) -Ability to import and export games -Ability to set a custom position and flip the board while changing it -Option to use figurine notation for viewing the moves of the game -Smart light and dark mode features -Option to show coordinates -Ability to move directly to the start and end of the game. Cons -As of now, every time a checkmate happens when playing both, the application just crashes. Sometimes, it also happens while playing against the computer. -The analysis can drain your battery a lot if left running for quite some time. -The sound is a bit dull as of the writing of this review. It's the same move sound but when a piece is captured, the same sound is played. -When setting up a custom position, it only allows you to have a set number of pieces. Example, if you have all eight pawns, it won't allow you to put extra pieces. You can't do crazy and impossible positions on this app. -You can have the computer play against itself, but it's manual-intensive. You would have to press "move now" every time it's the other side's turn. -Lowest time control is three minutes. Sorry, no bullet games happen on this app unless you wait two minutes on each side. -When the computer isn't using a fixed time control, it can take an eon for the computer to make a move. It is also self-aware of its remaining time. When it reaches 0:00, it won't lose, but will move instantly. You can't really lose on time. -I don't think the computer has a permanent brain feature. If there is, correct me. These are the pros and cons I have seen. I probably missed some or got some incorrect. Forgive me if I did.
