Mars Atlas

Explore a 3D globe of Mars
Category Price Seller Device
Reference $5.99 Julian James iPhone, iPad, iPod

Mars Atlas is an astronomy application that lets you use pinch and finger gestures to manipulate a 3D globe of Mars. As you zoom in more labels appear as finer detail comes into view. You can double tap on the labels to get more information about a particular feature.

Mars Atlas displays the approximate phase, axial tilt and central meridian of Mars from your chosen location and time, and renders these on the globe. You can switch to a 'Globe' mode that allows you to spin Mars around to see the whole globe. The feature database is searchable and can move the globe to a searched feature. The phase can be switched off to show the whole globe more clearly.

Date, time and location can be changed. There is also a realtime mode that will update to the current time.

The Mars globe can be shown with north or south at the top or inverted to suit different telescope views.

Over 1600 named features are included as well as 6 spacecraft that returned data from the surface of Mars.

You can swipe left and right on the phase view to go backwards and forwards a day.

Moon, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn atlases are also available on the App Store!

Also there is Planisphere, a star charting app, available on the App Store!

Amazing performance

Again, just what I was looking for. Same great format as Moon Atlas. Beautiful to look at and use. I especially love the spacecraft locations. Well worth the price. Apps like this are what makes iPhone the best. Thanks for the terrific app!

Cool app
Ostrichman141

Pretty cool app. Can u add a section for rover photos of mars? And id like to zoom in more, like in google earth

A great start.

I'm not sure this is worth $5.99 in it's current state. I've never understood why globes are so expensive. It appears this app follows that tradition. This is a great interactive, zoomable globe, but not much more. I'll pass on a few ideas. I hope your first rev adds some interesting new features.

Extremely overpriced
lucius_vorenus

Way, way, way overpriced for what it does, and the level of detail it provides. The Mars HD app is a much better value, and a better app outright.

A very comprehensive and educational app
lcd1080

I'm an astrophotographer who's been capturing high resolution photos of Mars with my telescope and webcam. The Mars Atlas app has helped me enormously to identify specific features in my images such as Candor Chasma and Valles Marineris. I especially like the identification of very small features like Airy Crater which measures only 25 miles wide. Also the app provides a longitude and latitude grid with numerical values which helps in knowing exactly where one is for any selected time. One can flip the image so that North or South is up and turn the labels and long/lat grid on or off. One may choose a real time update so that the globe rotates slowly with the passage of time or one may freeze the time at any user selected day, hour, and minute. The view of Mars can be chosen as the planet would be seen from Earth or as a freely rotable globe. The phase of Mars may be turned on or off. This app was worth every penny and offers great educational value. Pete

Mars atlas not worth it
BKhere

Does not show central meridian, or give the cm. Does not have grid marked for Lon and lat. Does not always go to requested date and time(???). Detail is not very good. Sometimes dumps me out to icon screen. What is the purpose of the full rotation feature? Where are the moons? Oh dear.

Decent, but not worth the money

This is an adequate app, but for six dollars I would expect higher resolution imagery. I zoomed into Gale Crater to look at the area where the upcoming Curiosity rover will be landing and was disappointed to see nothing but a mass of pixels. Unless you need offline functionality you're probably better off just using a NASA website.

Excellent

Easily worth the price.
