Audio ads right in the middle of a chapter now.

Audio ads right in the middle of a chapter now. Cheesy ad banners are not enough? Unbelievable.

I love it.

I really enjoy this app. I like to read along with the audio as I read old classic’s.

Great!!

Mel3225

I absolutely love this app! It is simple to use and really nice for when you love reading but have too many things to do to just sit down and read. The one hiccup I’ve experienced is that I keep getting the notification that I need to connect to the internet in order to listen...but I’m already connected. So it’s kind of frustrating at times. But other than that, this app is flawless! Even with the problem, it is definitely one of my favorites!

Great, but one huge problem

Heaving Seraph293

I really love the Librivox app. But there just recently came a pretty big issue to me that I want corrected as soon as the app is next updated: every time I listen to any given book on the app, somewhere in any given chapter of that book the sound will just stop. And I have to fast forward a few seconds to try to correct the problem. Then when I do, a few minutes later, it happens again! Powering off my phone does not work! Please fix this ASAP! Next update please! Thank you!

Great for listening to classics

I listen to audio books while I work and drive (40+ hours of listening time each week). Listening to that many hours of books per week would become very expensive on other subscription based platforms. Since I enjoy public domain books, this app is a great way to enjoy the works for free at times when I can’t be physically reading. Typically there is at least one very high quality recording for each novel I’ve wanted to listen to. Only downside is the ads played at the end of each chapter. The ads momentarily take you out of the immersive world of the book, but I understand the need for them. If they begin to bother me too much, I am happy there is an option to pay a small fee to remove audio ads or get the “pro” version of the app.

Housework, COVID, and LibriVox

amansquared

So, there’s COVID. I’m retired, I’m at home. My volunteer job is “on pause.” Housework isn’t. I HATE housework. Dishwashing, laundry, dusting, etc. HATE it! Gotta do it. No longer have the excuse of showing up to work, going to the movies, meeting friends for drinks. Used to check out audiobooks from the library. My husband and I would listen together while I did a few chores. Now my husband doesn’t have the attention span and it “bothers” him when I try to listen. Besides the library is closed, too. I try a few audio book apps/ services, but they are a bad fit. And expensive. One of them offered me TWO books every six weeks. Oh sure, there was a lot of FREE stuff, meditation tapes, music, exercise stuff, motivational audios, etc., but I need stories. Books I’ve no shortage off. Always a reader, I married another reader 40 some years ago. If only our income grew like our book collection, I’d have someone else doing housework for me. But you can’t read a book and scrub the tub at the same time. So I discovered LibriVox short story collections. Perfect for house work. In fact, I use them to time chores. A Sherlock Holmes story is just long enough to clean one room. Ambrose Bierce, Mark Twain get me through the dishes. Bret Harte . . . . never mind, bad example; Bret Harte, I usually stop what I’m doing and sit down and just listen to the story. Some readers are great and some not so, but I like them anyway. Extra marks marks for struggling through a story when you’re not sure how some of the words are pronounced. I like the randomness of the mix per collection. At first I was mildly irritated that the stories were in alphabetical order, but I learned to roll with it. I’m making this intolerably long, I know, but when I finish this review I have housework to do. LibriVox will not clean my kitchen, but it makes the job less painful.

The best

Great app, thousands of free audiobooks, downloadable. I live it and use it a lot.

Barefoot Nation days with Grandma reading Zane Grey by Kerosene lamp light.

Barefoot Nation Gang

My twin brother and I would sit for hours listening to grandma read stories written by Zane Grey (year 1947) - she would read till she almost lost her voice - then we would say; “grandma, read one more page”. G. (Jerry) Lynn Heathcock (C) July 22, 2021
