Great app! Just minor suggestions about order and stroke shape

Wisteria in the Distance

Bought this app to help my 9 year old daughter with her Japanese. She is playing with it right now and thinks it's a fun game (that's a good sign right there!) The only issues I have with the app are minor. First, I think it is a mistake to put the "Ya, yu, yo" kanas at the end of the alphabet sequence. In every book and class I've been in, those kanas come between "mo" and "wa". It is like putting R, S, and T after Z. I'd recommend putting the kana in the proper (standard) order in a future version. My other issue is only with the stroke shape on certain kana. They are missing small parts (usually the little up stroke tail like on "ki" and "sa"). I used to miss a point or get a knock on the head if I forgot those details, but someone just trying to learn to recognize the kana will still get it so it is not critical. Overall, I think it is a wonderful tool for learning. Looking forward to seeing others from you! Omedeto!

Truly a great app!!!

I have it on both my iPhone and my iPad. I just wish the little info button to toggle the hints was in the iPad version too. So 4 stars until then.

Awesome

Best and fastest way to learn hirigana and katana!

Awesome!!

Well, yes this is an awesome app. Its incredibly useful and very helpful as just another method to practice my kanas. I definitely recommend this to anyone learning. Although my one gripe is having the go, ji, zi, etc (you know the ones with the double hatch marks to the upper right hand corner) with the normal ka ki ke ku ko and so forth, I feel as though I'm not learning those as an individual kana so much as just adjusting the other ones. Although I guess that's not so much a complaint as a suggestion. Either way this is still a fantastic app. Worth the money.

This is the App you come back to.

Would like some way to toggle the word hints during practice other than using my thumb. You can group selections by any pattern you wish, such as wa, re, ne, or sa, chi, ra. Being able to practice strokes with finger swipe feels strangely traditional.

Excellent for active learning

I have tried several other ipad apps for learning hiragana and katakana and while some of them might arguably be a better reference, none of them provided good feedback or a regimented way to practice writing kana like Kana LS. Being forced to remember a glyph without having a guide to draw on top of, followed by feedback on stroke order and shape has really helped.

Great Learning App

I bought the iPad primarily for this app. It really delivered. I've been taking Japanese for a few months and knew Hiragana and just started with Katakana which is quite difficult because it is so subtle. This program really clarified the differences between shi, so, tsu and N. My recognition of the characters I already know has speeded up by taking the "Test" mode. It somehow makes the recognition process much faster. It's like lifting with weights. I feel my brain "muscle" getting stronger. This is after just one day! I was just using pen and paper before this so it's a quantum leap. The only improvement would be to have a choice of type fonts to practice with. I prefer a "serif" style font over the sans serif. The handwritten portion could also be improved with a better calligrapher. It lacks a certain aesthetic sensibility. These are minor criticisms. Overall I just love it. I've already bought your other Japanese vocables program in advance of the classes I'll be taking. Great job!

Without a doubt, one of my best app purchases

I purchased this at least 2 years ago and it is still one of my absolute favorites. It's easy to use, it's clear and uncluttered, it's easily costomizeable and it does exactly what it claims it will do -- teach you to write and read kana characters. I was so delighted with this app I ended up purchasing the other two (Kanji LS and Japanese LS) as well. Money well spent and study time well invested. I'm an extremely satisfied customer.

Awesome App

This app is great, it lets you choose which characters you want to study, and then you can practice writing. The test can be configured to test your reading or your writing of the characters. I studied Japanese and I can read most, but I have forgotten how to write them. This app would be great for anyone new or who has studied Japanese.
