Education | $3.99 | Paul Meier Dialect Services, LC, Apps | iPhone, iPad, iPod |
The app is brought to you, and voiced, by Paul Meier, a theatre professor specializing in voice, speech, accents and dialects, phonetics, heightened text, and Shakespeare; a renowned dialect coach for theatre and film; and a voice-over artist with many commercials and audio books to his credit. This has been his calling for more than 40 years, in his native London, in the United States where he is now based, and all over the world. He holds a first-class Certificate of Proficiency from the International Phonetic Association.
Among many of the famous directors with whom Meier has worked is Oscar winner Ang Lee, who says, “Paul [is] invaluable in maintaining dialect and ensuring clean, clear speech. … He has a great feel for the language, … and Paul’s contribution [to my film] through speech, voice, and dialect was crucial.”
In addition to the official IPA charts, this app presents one extra chart of Meier’s own devising: diphthongs and triphthongs of American and British English. The app is designed by Scott Means, based upon the official charts of the International Phonetics Association and an original interactive design by Eric Armstrong.
I’m on iOS 13 and there is no sound coming out when I’m on this app. I love everything about it except the fact that I can’t hear the pronunciation of the sounds. Please fix and I’ll increase my rating.
I was excited about this app and I’m sure it’s a great tool but it crashes every time any button in the app is pressed. Useless until it is fixed.
In have no idea what I’m supposed to do with this. I guess if I knew that I wouldn’t need the app.
This app has been exceptionally helpful in my development of constructed languages. Worth the $3.99. And I’ve tried most of the apps on itunes regarding IPA. There’s only one other that’s equally as helpful and thorough as this one.
I’ve tried everything but the sound does not work with this app. I have no way of contacting them.
Some how all the voice files are silence when I click on them. Please help.
It’s basically just a few screens you page through with a sound attached to each of the symbols. Still, it’s useful but a little odd to charge for something this limited. You think that might be the intro or help pages but it’s actually the whole app! I guess he is a famous dialogue coach and the app covers complex aspects of IPA, but it is really an almost trivial ‘app’
