GedView

Family tree research is becoming an ever more popular past time. Normally all of your genealogy information is locked away on your computer at home which isn't much use when you are out and about researching local records, or visiting locations such as graveyards, ancestral homes, or family reunions.

This is where GedView comes in. Carry around your entire family tree on your iPhone, iPod, or iPad and have all the data about your ancestors and even current descendants at your fingertips.

You can quickly check up on family relationships, dates / locations of events, and record new information. Despite the name GedView is not just a viewing tool. This includes taking photos, or video anywhere and anytime you like without needing to worry about a potentially costly internet connection. If using an iPhone, or a cellular enabled iPad you can even record your current location to add to any event.

If your tree contains lots of images you can even use GedView as a slideshow, showing all the pictures related to a given event, person, source, family. You can also play back any home movies you have in your tree. Media support is not limited to photos/video. Support is also included for any other file type your iPhone, iPod, or iPad is capable of opening. This may be PDFs, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, mp3 files. If you have an app installed that supports a specific document type and have a document of that type in your tree you will be able to view it via GedView.

Do you have some separate branches in your tree that you haven't connected yet? GedView allows you to store multiple trees so you can easily switch to view distinct branches.

Unlike other apps no specific computer application is required, nor is a subscription to any website. Instead standard GEDCOM files can be imported, These can be encoded as ASCII, ANSI, ANSEL, UTF-8, or UTF-16 and can be added to GedView via WiFi, downloading from a website, via iTunes, or even opened from other apps such as Mail, Safari, Dropbox etc.

While GedView is targeted towards GEDCOM 5.5.1 it will read in any version, and will also support many custom extensions used by other genealogy applications, and because GEDCOM hasn't been added as an after thought imports are fast and efficient.

You can even export GEDCOM files for sharing with family members or other researchers, or to transfer new information to your main computer.

A sample family tree containing the British monarchy is included.

If you have any problems, or suggestions please get in touch via the support email address.

Excellent tree app, for my iPhone and iPad. Professionally done and very easy to use. I've never had any problems with it, yet it continues to be updated and improved regularly. Great tech support.??

Worthless

Number one issue: this app does not have a tree view, just a list view. I bought and downloaded this app to allow me to view and edit GEDCOM files so I wouldn't have to completely reconstruct a part of my family tree in order to share it without exposing more than just one branch. Unfortunately, this app does not allow for trimming branches, you have to go in and delete families (actually, one couple and their children) one at a time or remove people individually. I may as well start a new tree from scratch and reenter everything! This app is utterly worthless.

Love It

I created my family tree on my pc using Family Historian. I was looking for an app to transfer it to my iPhone. I found Ged View and it is exactly what I was looking for. I was amazed at all the options for uploading my tree. Since my computer and phone are on the same home network, I choose to upload the files directly from computer to phone. It worked flawlessly! I couldn’t believe it but all 1487 people were there with all the family links in place. All 647 photographs were there and properly linked. Now I have my family tree in my pocket with photographs. I am very happy! The only reason I didn’t give five stars is because of one flaw I found. When I am looking at a photo and rotate my phone to horizontal, it skips to a different photo. I hope they fix that.

Drops Name Fields Without Warning
BackBlaster

2nd attempt to submit a review: much more abbreviated this time. Neither this app store profile nor the gedview web site provide a clear description of what the app actually does. The gedview app doesn't operate directly off the ged file. Instead, it converts the content of your ged into a new database, then no longer uses the original ged file. In the process of conversion, it dropped the middle name field content of my ged file, leaving the new database with ambiguous, corrupted data with first names and surnames, only. Since there's no log file created nor warnings issued about dropped or ignored data, It is impossible to know what else is ignored by the attempt to translate the ged file. It was a waste of $5 just to find out its limitations. The resulting database is worthless and can't be trusted with my ged files. I've deleted the app. Just get a good iOS-based family tree app like MobileFamilyTree that handles multiple versions of ged file formats for import and it provides a rich functional interface with FamilySearch's global genealogy database. it is functionally much, much more robust.

Total waste - Cannot view gedcom files

One would assume with a $5 app called “GedView”, that viewing gedcom files would be a function of said app. Don’t bother.

I recently purchased an ipod touch as a replacement for my aging Palm pilot. I needed a GEDCOM file viewer for my ipod touch. GedView is a very good product and is definitely worth the price. GedView would be much improved if it had the ability to search by events (e.g. burials) and if it could also list births, deaths, and marriages for a given date and had a relationship calculator. It would be cool to see these features added to a future version of GedView. Thank you for adding the “On This Day” feature. It would help if the names were easier to read with larger font and better color. It would really be neat if you created an “On This Day” widget for this app. Thank you for considering.

Great Appt

This is an easy app very complete to add family members. The developer was super fast responding a problem I encounter and extremely efficient showing a video how to fix it. Definitely the best family tree app.

Upgrade? Update? Huh?
dr_punditington

I've had this app for years. After updating it today, I can't open a file saved earlier without responding to a popup message which refers to needing an "upgrade" also referred to as an "update." Both terms are used. Neither is defined or explained, and it isn't clear whether they're just referring to updating a file, or charging for an "upgrade" to the app, so I deleted the app. It never was that good anyway.
