GE Mathdoku

Mathdoku (also known as KenDoku, Calcudoku or KenKen®) is a type of arithmetic/logic puzzle invented by Japanese math teacher Tetsuya Miyamoto. The puzzles were intended to be an instruction-free method of training the brain.

As in sudoku, the goal of each puzzle is to fill an NxN grid with digits (1 to N); such that...

・No digit appears more than once in any row or column.
・The numbers contained in each cage (outlined group of cells) produce a certain "target" number, when combined using the math operation provided.
・Digits may be repeated within a cage, as long as they aren't in the same row or column.

This version of the game supports 8 modes of play on iPhone, iPod Touch & iPad; plus GameCenter integration, so you can beat your friends' best times. Oh...and the puzzles are auto generated...so no in-app-purchases necessary!

NEEDS UPATE!

This is the best kenken app by far, and I’ve tried them all. I can’t live without it. However, since an os upgrade a few months ago it has been glitching. Touch response is very quick & smooth when you start a game, but it gets slower and slower as the game goes on until there is a second or more delay after touch. If I close the app and restart it, it usually goes back to normal and I can finish one game, but that’s ridiculous! PLEASE update so it runs fast and smooth. Thank you!

Decent!

There is a surprising shortage of KenKen or Mathdoku iPad apps. And most of them have significant problems - such as non-unique solutions. This app is quite good. I have done a dozen puzzles and they all can be solved with logic and have unique solutions. My complaints are minor: (1) the number keys are very small - there is plenty of open space to make them a little bigger and (2) change the background - the mint green is annoying!! FYI - be sure to read the instructions - to add pencil marks, you simply double-tap the cell...a nice feature!

Pencil marking does in fact work
Kenkenlover

The developer kindly and quickly responded when I complained about not being able to make the pencil marking work. He explained what I hadn't understood (you double click the square prior to clicking the numbers, you don't double click the numbers). So works fine

Challenging

Enjoy playing this game. It challenges me. Would like more options...like 7's and 8's. I mostly play the 9 level. But definitely like having unlimited puzzles. Main complaint is the number buttons need to be bigger. I am always miss typing the numbers and I do not have large fingers.

Great Job by Developer...

...simple in design, very well executed. I was up all night last night working my way to the hardest level...which I can't defeat...yet. Great price for a great game that will sharpen your mind. Lots of people think sudoku is a math game because it has numbers...it's not; it's just a logic game. Mathdoku (known by the trademarked name kenken when published in my local paper) is a math AND logic game. The dark borders enclose 2 or more (on the easy levels, sometimes just one box) boxes for a computation, either addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. The answer (sum, difference, product, or quotient) is given, and you have to supply the question: for example, for multiplication, you would need to supply the factors that multiply to make the given product. Like sudoku, all the numbers (actually single digits) to be used can only appear once in each row and each column. Operations don't have to be in the "right order": for example, subtraction where the answer is 5 could be in the order 1 and then 6, even though it's actually 6-1. That's why I don't recommend this game for very young children...it will confuse them. This game is great for mental math skills, and if you're good at breaking larger products into prime factorizations (60=2x2x3x5), harder levels will be a lot easier. Normally, if you've done this on paper (or if you've done a lot of sudoku), you break a single box into 2 triangular parts and use a pencil if you can narrow down that box to one of 2 numbers. What's nice about this game is that it let's you "pencil" in 3 possibilities into a box! If you know the answer for a box, you single-tap it (and the whole box lights up). If you want to pencil-in, you double tap it (and only the corner lights up). What took me a while to catch on, is if you want to change or modify what you penciled-into a box (say, reduce 3 choices down to only 2), you double-tap the box, and then type the number that you want to remove...it will go away and the other "pencil" markings will remain. This game also allows you to pick the level you want from many levels from easiest (usually that means less rows and colums) to hardest, so you can get better and advance. Much better for your brain than watching reality tv...A+ to the developer from a former math teacher, me. Check out this developer's island-and-bridge game, a great logic game that's also addicting...this developer also has a 4-game bundle you can purchase!

Horrendous!
Kittygirl1213

Terrible ui (low resolution, doesn't use entire screen for new iPhones) and its incredibly buggy.

App not updated and not compatible IOSx
BoarderGeek99

Developer hasn't updated app in who knows how long. After you install the app your phone will give you a warning that it is too old and not compatible. From what I was able to see from interface it is terrible design anyway. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Unlimited Puzzles
Phoibos

The developer is still maintaining the game. Bravo, and Thank you! However, the recent update made the controls for entering numbers even smaller than before so they're now very hard to hit. An unnecessary annoyance in an otherwise great game. Please fix! Original review: Probably one of the most underrated puzzle apps. This is a great app for Kenken (ahem Mathdoku) addicts. It auto-generates puzzles in several difficulty degrees. No need to buy packages with puzzles you’re never going to look at. Almost all needed features are there. The only thing I’m missing is the ability to save an unfinished game so you can pick it up again after playing another one. If you love Math Puzzles and only want to pay once, get this game.

Almost Mathdoku Heaven

Edit 9/9/17: Thank you, thank you, thank you for the number keypad update. ????? There are remarkably few good KenKen/Mathdoku apps out there. I've tried most of them. The biggest issue w/ most apps is the limited number of games available. I'd finish them all, then I'd go back and try to beat my previous time scores...because what else is there to do? Then I finally found this Mathdoku app. Unlimited games! You'll never run out! You can choose the size and the difficulty, so there's always the perfect challenge level awaiting you. I'm very happy to have found it. There are, however, a couple of issues that took this from a 5-star to a 4-star review.... My biggest complaint, (and it can't be THAT difficult to remedy, can it?), is the eensy-weensy number keypad. C'mon, just make the numbers a little bigger, please!!! There's so much empty space around the numbers! There must be a way you could give us just a bit more space for the average finger. And it sure would be nice to be able to save a game to complete later. It's a bit frustrating to invest time in a puzzle and not be able to finish it later if you need to stop. Grrrrr aargh! With those two things remedied , this would be the best Mathdoku app out there, hands down. (Well, it probably already is that, but I'd be in Mathdoku heaven if those two things happened....)

No pencil
Drax was Green

How is there no pencil? You cant guess in kenken because there are so many possibilities. You need a pencil al least. Other than that, a minimalist app with NO in app purchases thank god.
