First Phrases HD Lite

This interactive, beautifully illustrated and animated app for the iPAD is perfect for the toddler or speech-delayed child who is learning how to put two-three words together or any child who is learning basic English phrases. It provides many opportunities to both hear (receptive), see, and say/record (expressive) 10 different verb + noun combinations, such as: eat the carrot, drive the train, close the door, drink the juice, sleep on the bed, turn on the light, and more. A delightful cat performs them, with 28 possible animation combinations. It is also a great way to teach the article “the” in a meaningful phrase context.

How you play: Tell the cat what to do! By touching the illustrated parts of the phrases in order (verb+ object forms: “eat the carrot”) the child hears the pre-recorded spoken phrase modeled. The user has the option to repeat this action once, twice or three times in the settings for maximum auditory input. The child then watches an animation of the cat performing the command to help the child associate the words and their meaning. Now it’s the child’s turn to say it and tell the cat what to do! Touch the microphone and record, listen again, and watch the animal follow your direction. Use the optional visual support by tapping on the shapes above the microphone.

This format is especially powerful for children with speech delays and autism spectrum disorders who need strong visual support with as little background clutter as possible, and for use in speech therapy sessions. The format also is a terrific way to support early literacy for left to right orientation, reading (with text on feature) and word boundaries. Options include text on/text off, recording feature on/off, presentation of the phrase in 3 segments (verb + the + object) or 2 segments (verb + the object).

Great idea!!
Speechisme

I love this app! It's been a very fun way to work on 3 word phrases but mostly to get the article "the" in a phrase for my preschoolers. The animations are very cute. I also find I can pause them and ask, "what is he doing?" and elicit "ing" verbs too.

Needs improvement
SLPphx

There should be a way to disable the pause button because my clients with autism fixate on pushing it repeatedly. Also, they should disable the feature that pauses activity each time you touch the screen bc younger children tend to want to touch the cat which pauses his activity. There is also a problem w/ the record button freezing each time the app launches

Kudos to this developer!

The features of this app are noteworthy and a pleasant surprise. I am using it with my child who has autism. He has been stuck a bit at the singular word level. The touching of the words in order is having an amazing effect, likewise also he is entranced with hearing his own voice and will practice many times. I am very happy with its features- no negative issues here. Very excellent app, well thought out. Would love the option to have a British narrator to speak the phrases.

Super app!
SuefromMI

This is a great way to practice "the" in phrases. Thanks!

It is perfect for helping practice and develop language. I hope to get the full version soon.

Great. More like 4.5 because.....

Great app. Very good for autistic child who is reluctant to speak. Daughter loves it. One issue we have is sometimes the app is slow to recognize touch and it can be a little frustrating. Fix that and you definitely get 5 with me! Love it.

I used this app today with 2 very different students -- one nonverbal working on basic communication, the other with poor intelligibility. Both students were highly motivated to work! They enjoyed seeing the results of their "efforts". Definitely want to purchase the full version of this!

It's okay.

Don't love the animations (look like really simple power point) and the child I did speech therapy with needed longer to record her phrase. We ran out of time nearly every time.

Doesn't work for long
Ivymae

I used this app quite often and the kids loved it. Unfortunately it doesn't work right any longer. I get the same verb every time. I tried changing things in settings but it didn't help. "Drop the___" gets old real fast. I'd love the app if this could be fixed.
