App Review by a DM

TabithaLanzing

While it took a while to learn DM DJ to use it to its best ability; ive enjoyed it immensely. Following the directions to add playlists of my soundtracks made this the perfect app for me. A few other DMs I know went heavy into the other music RP program and after a couple campaigns dropped using it. The time it took to organize and the monetary drain became annoying. The simplicity of this one keeps it useful: select your environment, music, day/night, and weather and youre good to go! Go learn to create your own playlists! Its a 4 out of 5 because it needs more modern and scifi environments--its mainly fantasy with a limited selection of other environments. If it opened up users to create their own environments/sound effects it would be a solid 5.

Amazing!

I love this app! Not only can I add atmosphere to perfectly match any situation, but I can also add in FX for the battles! The only thing I really wish this was able to do would be to have the app continue playing in the background so if I had a note saved, I could close the app while it continued playing music, pull up the relevant notes and then right back to add the sound effects...

Eh.

Fixing the previous version bug and 64 bit isn't much of an update. Haven't had any new content in over 2 years.

Nice app but missing what I was looking for.

So yeah my first campaign involves my party getting shanghaied into an arena where they fight to the death. Tried as I might I was unable to find a cheering crowd sound effect or arena or jeering or anything that would have worked. Might use it for later stuff but for know I'm going to have to look elsewhere. ^_^ thanks.

Flawed design for custom use

While this App is a good idea I believe it is over all flawed do to their licensure agreement and overall coding outline. According to their website in there FAQ you are not able to turn off the environmental sounds without overwriting it with Music, in other words there will always be noise coming from the app. This constant noise takes away from the value of their other features such as their effects such as sound effects or their weather sounds which are therefore drowned out by environmental sounds. Unlike the music weather and sound effects cannot be changed in volume relative to the other components. The only option left then is to mute everything and pretty much render the app useless. I attempted to try and get around this problem by adding personalized the music to it, which is a great feature that they theoretically offer, with the customized music being "silence" but I was unable to have this actually go into the app because the only music that will carry over from your playlist is music that has actually been purchased through the iTunes store. I had an extensive conversation with Apple and they were not able to help me come up with a solution to this problem because it is extremely complicated to try and add the coding of iTunes store purchases to Music that was not purchased through the store. In short while this app is a good idea and can be nice for basic use, but if you want to be a truly good DM and not have a bunch of annoying incredibly loud environmental noises going all the time and still produce other find noises which would be the part of the point in this app I would suggest against using this app.

Can't pause environment sounds

kingemer

Everything else is great so far, but I need to be able to pause environmental sounds. The support website says they can't in order to protect intellectual property, but I can't use defective software. Would be even more secure if it just didn't play sound at all...

Annoying environments

Solringen_91

App doesn't play any sounds/music without playing some kind of environment sound effects in the background. Wish I would have known that before forking over my money.

Super Helpful but...

It's a good app with multiple uses for DM's, but ultimately it's still very flawed. In terms of ease of use I'd give it an 7.5/10. It syncs very easily with your music collection, even from subscription based music apps like Apple Music, and it has a very helpful guide you can access from the options. The Dice Rollers and custom dice formula creator it has are an amazing touch. The problems however are the fact that there's no effective quick way to silence the sounds of certain options. A pause button would be an awesome addition to have for the layers. Also the lack of sound affect options is pretty bad for a paid DJ app. Even free DM Sound board apps like RPGSounds seem to have more sound affects and battle loops. What makes the lack of FX even worse is that half of them are sci-fi space sounds and half are traditional fantasy sounds. More SFX, a pause button for the layers, and if you could make it continue to play from the background while I switch over to other apps that would be amazing. Or better yet, add a customizable initiative tracker. That would definitely make this a 5 star app. Hell even if the tracker was a paid addition with slots for info I'd definitely pay for it just so I don't have to interrupt the scene music to do my battles.

Great app but missing a few essentials

NakedFury1

The app is amazing and the sounds perfect for spicing up a gaming sessions and setting the perfect atmosphere for that cave exploration or sailing part. However, it is missing a way to bluntly put tell it to shut up without outright muting it all. Better audio volume controls would be amazing and a pause-stop for background sounds too. Recommended.

Make.a.pause.button.

Awesome concept but extremely tiresome that I can’t even pause the sounds. This is such an easy fix. It would be perfect otherwise.
