Great app!

ChessReviewer

I absolutely love this app. I've used CT-ART on my computer, but it's SO much nicer to have these tactics on my phone.

It's fire.

It's fire. It's fire. It's fire. It's fire.

Great app for training

Not just puzzles but actual instruction.

Finally have CT Art on iPad & iPhone

Best chess tactics app I've come across in the App Store. This has all the functionality of the desk top version while having a much improved look. For anyone not familiar with CT Art it was written about extensively in Rapid Chess Improvement by Michael De la Maza and was a major factor in the tremendous ratings increase he experienced as an adult player.

The interface

Cid Hamete Benengeli

The problems are awesome, but the interface is clunky. Here are some examples, which I mention in detail in the hope that they’ll be fixed: 1) When you make a wrong move and it shows you the refutation, the app doesn’t pause or let you review the refutation, but just shows it (sometimes several moves too quickly to keep track of) and sends you back to where you were before; it would be great if, after being shown the refutation, it paused and gave me arrows with which to scroll through it before I hit the arrow that returns me to the problem. Or, if the refutation didn’t play automatically at all, but just had me scroll through it at my own pace before giving me the option to return to the main line. 2) When I play through variations of a problem, I’m not told this; it would be great if this were clearly displayed in the same way that reputations are displayed, at the top of the screen, perhaps indicated by a blue header rather than red/green. 3) There needs to be a way to review problems rather than just replay them; the many refutations and variations can make it hard to keep track of the main line, so it would be helpful to see the problem done correctly and straight through after you’ve finished it. 4) the algebraic notation at the bottom of the screen is cumbersome and unnecessary; after a couple of variations/refutations it’s too long to really view in such a tiny space, and it doesn’t make sense to constantly display the wrong moves; the problem’s full-length notation would work much better as a drop-down or pop-up menu that we can view when we want to; instead, the part of the screen it takes up should be used for buttons (to scroll through/review moves OR variations/refutations after you’ve been shown them but before returning to the main line) and to algebraically display the correct moves you’ve made so far.

About time this came along

A lot of material

rbrins

I just bought this app at the recommendation for a new player to learn and practice on. It has a ton of material and puzzles in it, the only thing that gets me is the lack of introduction to a section. There is a pop up telling what the next section is but that seems to be it. Perhaps a more detailed theory page then go into the puzzles. That is why it is getting a 4 out of 5 because it is lacking that one explanation piece.

An amazing tactics trainer

Artkrp

This is an incredible app which teaches tactics based on specific motifs. If you are an aspiring player who wishes to work on specific types of tactics, as you should, look no further. For $8 you can’t beat this. How many chess books have you paid $20 or more for that can beat the ease of an interactive, tactical trainer with a strong playing engine for $8? Just buy it, it’s a great app.
