Automatic renewal-why can’t I opt out when I renew?

Here we go with the scam to get money out of you. I renewed my subscription today. It says that they will notify you before it runs out in case you don’t want to renew but it never happens that way. I wrote to customer service and the rep ignored my request and rambled on about how much I will enjoy having the auto renewal. I like the magazine but live in a town frequently featured in it. Will cancel if they don’t honor my request.
