Because Clio is free, it depends upon people like you who care about history and culture. If you would like to help, please send us an email at [email protected] We are working to provide new features like push notifications and interactive walking tours thanks to donations and other forms of support. The Clio Foundation is recognized as a public charity under IRS code 501c3 and all donations are tax deductible.
With several hundred new entries and improvements being added each month, Clio is not only a website and smartphone application, but also a collaborative research, interpretation, and map-building project. Museum professionals, scholars, and their students contribute most of Clio’s content. We also depend upon local history experts and museum volunteers who often know more about local history than anyone else. Each day, this partnership of local history experts and professional historians is building a comprehensive, dynamic, and interactive map of American history.
The walking tours are great and this helped us discover a few interesting museums. I wish we could check in places with Facebook direct on the app.
As a librarian, I appreciate the way this app connects people to information as well as sources. Very educational for history lovers.
I used the Clio website in one of my classes and the students had so much fun that they told their parents and now we are thinking about creating a historic walking tour.
Great app. We used it in Denver and by the end of the week we knew the city so well that our hotel concierge started asking us questions about local history.
I was sad when Detour announced that they were not going to keep making walking tours so I was glad to discover this as a replacement. I like the way Clio includes individual historic sites and museums as well as walking tours-- that is useful for times when you only have the chance to see one or two places.
Our teenager son actually enjoyed using this. He read all the information about historical markers we passed and it was his idea to visit some of the places he found. Please keep adding sites!
This is hands down the best app out there for discovering historical sites. The app is simple enough to navigate while offering very detailed histories of places. I look forward to trying the walking tours.
This app is very fun and educational-our family used Clio as on our last trip and it helped us to think about potential places to visit this summer. I like the way it offers background information -- much better than the other travel sites and apps I've tried in the past
A friend shared this on Facebook a long time ago and I just thought there had to be a catch. The app had no ads and loaded quickly and it offers as much information a guidebook. I just wish it was available beyond the US
This seems to be the best history app out there. Maybe even the best app in history (get it?).
