BARD Mobile

A service of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), Library of Congress
Category Price Seller Device
Book Free Library Of Congress iPhone, iPad, iPod

The BARD Mobile app provides access to braille and talking books directly from the NLS Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD). BARD contains nearly 80,000 books, magazines, and music scores in audio and braille formats, with new selections added daily.

With BARD Mobile, you can play the audio materials on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. If your device is connected to a refreshable braille display through Bluetooth, you can also read the braille materials available on BARD.

Before you can use this BARD Mobile app, you must be registered with a braille and talking-book library in the NLS network of cooperating libraries. If you aren’t registered but think you qualify for this service because you cannot read regular print as a result of a visual or physical disability, locate your local library for the blind and physically handicapped at http://www.loc.gov/nls/find.html or call 1-800-NLS-READ to apply for service.

Once you are registered, you may then sign up for a BARD account and receive your BARD user name and password. Download the free app and sign in with your BARD user name and password to get started. You’ll only need to do this the first time you use the app. The app contains a user manual that you may access through the Help feature.

The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), Library of Congress, administers the braille and talking-book program, a free library service available to residents of the United States and its territories and American citizens living abroad whose low vision, blindness, or physical disability makes reading regular print difficult. Through its national network of cooperating libraries, NLS mails digital audio players and books and magazines—in audio and in braille—directly to enrollees at no cost. Music instructional materials are available in large-print, braille, and recorded formats. Select materials are also available online for download.

Bard Mobile Rating.

I am thoroughly enjoying this app. I love the update version with the sleep timer. I especially like the addition of stopping at the end of chapters! I don't know what ya'll can do now to make this a better app!

Great app but there are problems
CODE CUTTER

Great app but there are problems on the iPad. I keep getting an error that says: File failed to extract. The only fix is to delete the app and download it between each group of books that you download. Not fun since it erases the books your reading when you do the reinstall. Also, there is no web page dedicated to the maintenance of the app. That means no where to tell the developer what is going. iPad 2 most recent iOS version.

OK, so when I get into my account it says I have exceeded my limit however when I go to the website doesn't tell me I've removed

Unable to browse by subject
Azarry

Hi, whenever I go to the Bard site using this app and try to browse by subject, the app freezes. I tell it to browse fantasy, and then hit go, and it will not bring up any results. So I'm stuck either searching by title or name, or looking at recently added books. I haven't tried browsing by author or title yet. Either way, please fix this. I'm using an IPad mini2. Thanks.

Suggestion
Tiny kittie

I'd like to suggest it would be pretty cool if you could see or listen to books where you left off on multiple devices instead of having to start over and not see your books and your wish list anymore it would just be pretty awesome if you could listen to the book where you left off crossed devices so that way you don't have to re-download the books are east of us if you have more than one device

Bug not fixed
Diva Yva

I actually love this app. I have read over 60 books in the last six months. I wasn't aware of a bug which was supposedly fixed on June 8. I did not experience any problems with prior to this update. Today, my app completely stopped working and I can't listen to anything. Please get this fixed!

Could use improvement

This app is pretty accessible. Signing in. However, it is not great when you are trying to download.trying to download it downloads so slow and you cannot download without Wi-Fi

Mixed review

I love BARD mobile. It gives me access to books at times when using the full size player isn't feasible... Like when I'm exercising or shopping. A bug that was in the original program is back in the latest update. The screen stays on and uses a lot of battery. Also I cannot use any other app while listening to a book. So when my transit app sends a notification that my bus is coming or my husband texts me, it interrupts the book and I have to manually click on the app and start button to resume reading (BARD does not respond to voice commands) you fixed this once, I have faith you can do it again ???

Great with Some Issues
BrightHalo

I really like the bookmark and incriminating fast forward systems. Overall I like the bard app but there are some issues: 1. Books don't seem to download in when the app is in the background. 2. Weird XML missing required elements error that seems to cause no noticeable problem. 3. Clunky add book to wishlist and go to wishlist to download setup.
